BWW Review: Meticulously Written, Directed and Performed THE CALL at Dobama
by Roy Berko
- Oct 26, 2015
Tanya Barfield, author of THE CALL, which is now on stage at Dobama Theatre, didn't want to write the play. She stated in a December, 2012 interview, 'Without realizing what I was doing, I pointedly and stubbornly refused. . . What I knew-what I was known for-were plays about the African-American experience through history. I did not want to write a contemporary play, a play close to me, a play about adoption.'

by Sally Henry Fuller
- Sep 19, 2015
Following its short summer hiatus, Theatre Nova is preparing to open Pulitzer Prize nominee Tanya Barfield's BRIGHT HALF LIFE on October 1. The play whisks the audience through the romance of Erica (Alysia Kolascz) and Vicky (Breon Canady), their courtship, marriage, and life together continuing backward and forward in time at a breathless pace. A conversation that begins at the office might continue at an amusement park later, and conclude while they're skydiving; the dreamlike narrative promises a unique, witty, and heartfelt look at love, pain, and hope over the course of a lifetime.

BWW Reviews: THE CALL Asks Big Questions at Theater J
by Jeffrey Walker
- May 15, 2015
Tanya Barfield's THE CALL has come to the Atlas Performing Arts Center on H Street in a production that gives full value to the huge questions posed by the play. THE CALL does not give easy answers and that is just fine with me. But it sure makes you think.
Inspired by Barfield's own experience with international adoption, THE CALL is not a documentary by any means. This is a very human story, with one eye on the personal and one eye looking beyond to the big picture, a hallmark of brilliant theatre if there ever was one. Director Shirley Serotsky's precise direction enhances the global scope while remaining focused on Annie and Peter's bumpy road to parenthood.
