BWW Reviews: CATF: THE FULL CATASTROPHE Stuffed Full of LaughsBWW Reviews: CATF: THE FULL CATASTROPHE Stuffed Full of Laughs
by Johnna Leary - Jul 16, 2015

In a twist on the typical modern American romance, The Full Catastrophe shows just how funny and futile our modern ideas about love can be. Dr. Jeremy Cook is a successful linguist, now unemployed, and accepts a mysterious job offer from an eccentric businessman, Mr. Pillow. As part of the "Pillow Project", Jeremy becomes a live-in marriage counselor to fighting suburban couple Dan and Beth, as the couple tries to hide the fact they need counseling from their adolescent son, Robbie. Complications arise as Jeremy realizes he really has no idea how to work as a marriage counselor, having never been married before, and that he is falling in love with Beth, who reminds him of his old flame who got away. Directed by Ed Herendeen and written by Michael Weller, this sarcastic, sweet and witty update of your Leave It to Beaver-esque family will leave audiences rolling with laughter. (more...)

BWW Reviews: The Messy But Effective Premiere of WE ARE PUSSY RIOT at the Contemporary American Theater FestivalBWW Reviews: The Messy But Effective Premiere of WE ARE PUSSY RIOT at the Contemporary American Theater Festival
by Jack L. B. Gohn - Jul 14, 2015

The success of PUSSY RIOT rests upon what author Barbara Hammond gets right. This includes a recreation of an actual Pussy Riot provocation/performance; excerpts from the Russian government's show trial which rely largely on the actual words of the defendants, lawyers, and judge; and the language and attitudes of the authorities, especially the police and the judiciary, which are notorious. And overarching these, the show nails the crisis of authority and legitimacy for the Russian state and the Russian Orthodox Church, a crisis the Pussy Riot protestors helped exacerbate for a while to an acuteness sharper than even the play conveys. The Bushwick Starr and terraNOVA Collective are proud to present the world premiere of acclaimed playwright Christina Masciotti's newest work, Social Security. The play centers on June, a retired pretzel factory worker, who finds herself deaf after forty years with machines, widowed, and stranded in the urban muck of Reading, PA. She forges ahead gamely, aided by her robust will to find the good in life, and attended, for better or worse, by a few neighbors. Her landlord, once a community pillar, insinuates himself into what remains of her affairs with Machiavellian panache, while a younger neighbor from down the block selflessly chaperones her trips to the grocery store. But June, generous in her affections and unworldly-wise, seesaws between these two unlikely alliances, and her yearning for ordinary human companionship only drives her further into danger. Yasmina Reza's comedy is a four-way prizefight that is not to be missed. (more...)
