?Neighborhood Classics presents celebrated violinist Rachel Barton Pine in concert on Tuesday, November 18 at 7pm at P.S. 321 in Brooklyn (180 Seventh Ave.). Pine will perform Bach's Sonata in G Minor and selections from Paganini's 24 Caprices, Op. 1, plus new works dedicated to her from New York composers Mohammed Fairouz (“For Egypt” from Sonata for Unaccompanied Violin Native Informant, from 2011) and Earl Maneein (Be12(OH)12(BTB)4 Metal Organic Framework, from 2014). The concert will be hosted by Neighborhood Classics Founder and Artistic Director Simone Dinnerstein. All ticket sales for this one-hour, family-friendly concert benefit P.S. 321. (more...)

Newly adapted by Stephen Schwartz (Wicked, Pippin and Godspell) from the original adaptation by Stephen Schwartz and Nina Faso, WORKING is the working man's A Chorus Line. A musical exploration of 26 people from all walks of life, with songs by all-star composers Craig Carnelia, Micki Grant, Tony Award winner Lin-Manuel Miranda, Mary Rodgers, Susan Birkenhead, Stephen Schwartz and Grammy Award winner James Taylor. As its opening song, and the Walt Whitman poem from which it was inspired, says, WORKING is all about the 'varied carols' of working Americans. For nearly four decades, this musical has been celebrating the high (and low) lights of the American workforce. Conceived and adapted by Stephen Schwartz (GODSPELL, WICKED) and Nina Faso, the show employs no fictional characters, instead, it draws from real-life individuals and the stories that they told legendary author and historian Studs Terkel for his book of the same name. The Rollins College production of the musical, running now through Saturday, October 4th at the Annie Russell Theatre is a joyful, if not over-stuffed, examination of this ultimately uplifting material. "Un Mejor Dia Vendra" echoes the chorus of a song from Working, a musical based on the 1974 bestseller of the same name by Studs Terkel. "A better day will come." The refrain is sung by a character named Emilio, a migrant farmworker who began picking crops with his family at the age of eight. The song was removed from Working in 2011, but can be seen in the upcoming production at the Annie Russell Theatre at Rollins College. (more...)

The Old Globe today announced the full cast and creative team for the World Premiere of Bright Star, a new American musical featuring music by Edie Brickell and Steve Martin, lyrics by Brickell, and book by Martin, based on an original story by Martin and Brickell. Directed by Walter Bobbie, Bright Star will run September 13 - November 2, 2014 on the Donald and Darlene Shiley Stage in the Old Globe Theatre, part of the Globe's Conrad Prebys Theatre Center. Preview performances run September 13 - September 27. Opening night is Sunday, September 28 at 7:00 p.m. Single tickets go on sale on Friday, August 8 at noon. (more...)

A full schedule is now available for Let's Get Working, a new three-day festival honoring the life and work of Chicago legend Studs Terkel at the University of Chicago's Reva and David Logan Center for the Arts, 915 E. 60th Street, Chicago. Let's Get Working explores Terkel's legacy while showcasing individuals and groups from Chicago and beyond who have been influenced and inspired by Terkel's work as a broadcaster, historian, actor, and Pulitzer Prize-winning author.
