The Old Globe today announced the full cast and creative team for the World Premiere of Bright Star, a new American musical featuring music by Edie Brickell and Steve Martin, lyrics by Brickell, and book by Martin, based on an original story by Martin and Brickell. Directed by Walter Bobbie, Bright Star will run September 13 - November 2, 2014 on the Donald and Darlene Shiley Stage in the Old Globe Theatre, part of the Globe's Conrad Prebys Theatre Center. Preview performances run September 13 - September 27. Opening night is Sunday, September 28 at 7:00 p.m. Single tickets go on sale on Friday, August 8 at noon. (more...)

Nick Gehlfuss (Shameless, The Newsroom), Shawn Hatosy (Southland, Reckless), Amber Tamblyn (Joan of Arcadia, Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants) and Alicia Witt (Justified, 88 Minutes) are cast in the Geffen Playhouse production of Reasons to Be Pretty, nominated for the Tony Award for Best Play (2009). Helmed by Geffen Playhouse Artistic Director Randall Arney, Reasons to Be Pretty will be performed in the Gil Cates Theater through August 31 with an opening night of tonight, August 6. (more...)

The Old Globe to Launch Free San Diego Tour of ALL'S WELL THAT ENDS WELL This Fall

The Old Globe today announced the creation of an exciting new producing platform, Globe for All. This free-of-charge tour of a professional production of Shakespeare will allow the theatre to serve more communities throughout San Diego by collaborating with a diverse range of local organizations. Old Globe Artistic Director Barry Edelstein will direct the first production, Shakespeare's fascinating romance All's Well That Ends Well. He plans to cast local professional actors, including recent graduates of the Old Globe/University of San Diego M.F.A. Program in classical acting. The first Globe for All free Shakespeare tour will begin October 28 and will culminate in three low-cost performances in the Globe's Hattox Hall November 7-9. (more...)

BWW Reviews: ACT's Three Quirky ONE ACTS Feels Like One Too Many in Total

In my opinion One Act plays are an underutilized form in the theatrical world. Too short to take up an entire evening's entertainment and so they get overlooked. Thankfully ACT has chosen not to shy away from the form with their current offering, "An Evening of One Acts" and has even chosen works by some iconic American authors. And while the evening was loaded with quirky fun, two of the one acts felt as if they could have ended a few times over and ran a bit long. (more...)

Michael Cohl Reveals SPIDER-MAN Arena Tour in the Works for 2015-16

In a recent interview with the Wall Street Journal, Spider-Man Turn Off the Dark producer Michael Cohl revealed that the show will n fact not be opening in Las Vegas. Instead an arena tour is in the works for 'late 2015 or winter 2016.' He told WSJ: "I think Spider-man is a pop culture rock show that was meant to be in arenas." When asked about the recently cancelled Jesus Christ Superstar arena tour, another project with which he was affiliated, Cohl commented: "It was a disaster. Ticket sales were terrible." (more...)

Sean Watkins 4th Solo Album 'All I Do Is Lie' Out Today Via Roaring Girl Records

During a nine year recording hiatus from his Grammy award winning band Nickel Creek, singer/songwriter/guitarist Sean Watkins released his third solo album Blinders On, teamed up with Switchfoot singer, Jon Foreman, to form the band Fiction Family, as well as co-founded the experimental supergroup Works Progress Administration (WPA). In addition, for the last decade Sean & his sister Sara Watkins (also from Nickel Creek) have hosted a monthly residency at the Hollywood club, Largo, for their popular music show, Watkins Family Hour, which has featured guests such as Fiona Apple, Jackson Browne, Booker T, Grant Lee Phillips, John C.
