BWW Review: BEN VEREEN Finds Magic to Do at Catalina Jazz ClubBWW Review: BEN VEREEN Finds Magic to Do at Catalina Jazz Club
by Don Grigware - Dec 21, 2015

On Friday December 18 the legendary Ben Vereen came to Catalina Jazz Club for his latest one-man cabaret An Evening with Ben Vereen. Backed by three fabulous musicians, musical director David Loeb at the piano, Tom Kennedy on bass and Marc DiCianni on drums, Vereen took the stage for 70 minutes and let fly. There was enough energy and passion abounding for three performers, let alone one. Known as a primo dancer, that was at a minimum, as he is approaching 70, but he moved in constant rhythm across the stage and back as he lovingly sang 20 songs, mostly from Broadway. There was very little patter; Vereen poured his soul into the work and kept his packed house begging for more. (more...)

by BWW News Desk - Dec 3, 2015

Dale Head (dalehead.net), a jazz and blues powerhouse vocalist and trumpet player, today announced that he will be celebrating the hundredth anniversary of the birth of the voice of the 20th century, Frank Sinatra, by reviewing 40 years of his amazing career. 'From his early days to his retirement in 1972 and his comeback in the Main Event, Frank Sinatra lived a life of legends,' said Dale Head. 'With this performance, we will show you how Frank rose to stardom, fell from grace, and came back, multiple times to be the most iconic entertainer of the 20th Century. Using photos, videos, creative narration, and recreating some remarkable vocal duets, our goal is to give you a taste of what it might have been like to be in the studio at Capital with Nelson Riddle, in the audience at the Sand with County Basie and Quincy Jones, or finally at Madison Square Garden when none other than Howard Cosell introduced Sinatra as a boxer making his comeback in the Main Event.' BWW Interview: Sandy Hackett & Lisa Miller of SANDY HACKETT'S RAT PACK CHRISTMAS at Fred Kavli TheatreBWW Interview: Sandy Hackett & Lisa Miller of SANDY HACKETT'S RAT PACK CHRISTMAS at Fred Kavli Theatre
by Cary Ginell - Dec 2, 2015

December 12 marks the centennial of Frank Sinatra's birth, which makes the arrival of Sandy Hackett's Rat Pack Christmas, which plays for one performance this Saturday at the Thousand Oaks Civic Arts Plaza, all the more special. Since 2009, Hackett, son of the late comedian Buddy Hackett, and his wife, Lisa Miller, have been presenting their stage shows that celebrate the hip, swingin', ring-a-ding-ding aura of the original Las Vegas Rat Pack. During the late '50s and early '60s, the Rat Pack ruled the Copa Room at the Sands Hotel & Casino in Las Vegas, a freewheeling act that incorporated Great American Songbook tunes with a raucous, let's-throw-caution-to-the-wind attitude that became the definition of 'cool' in show business. It was true for their 'The Experiment Cabaret' and I was not disappointed when I walked into the world famous Sayers Club in Hollywood, transformed into the Copa Room at the Sands Hotel in Las Vegas during the reign of the Rat Pack in their current celebratory piece entitled 'A NIGHT AT THE SANDS' - A Vegas Musical Cocktail With an L.A. Twist. (more...)
