STAGE TUBE: On This Day for 1/1/16 - Frank LangellaSTAGE TUBE: On This Day for 1/1/16 - Frank Langella
by Stage Tube - Jan 1, 2016

Happy Birthday, Frank Langella! Langella won his first Tony Award for his performance in Edward Albee's Seascape and 1975 and was nominated for another for what may have been the performance for which he was best known for in the early part of his career: the title role of the 1977 Broadway production of Dracula. He then appeared on Broadway in such plays as Sherlock's Last Case, Strindberg's The Father (winning a Drama Desk Award), Match (Tony Award nomination), and Fortune's Fool, for which he won a second Tony Award. He was cast as Richard Nixon in Peter Morgan's Frost/Nixon, which received enthusiastic reviews during a run at the Donmar Warehouse and Gielgud Theatre in London before moving to New York's Bernard B. Jacobs Theater in April 2007, culminating in Langella's third Tony Award. He reprised the role of Nixon in the 2008 film Frost/Nixon, directed by Ron Howard. (more...)

BWW Review: IN THE HEART OF THE SEA is Beautiful, but Depthless Whale TaleBWW Review: IN THE HEART OF THE SEA is Beautiful, but Depthless Whale Tale
by Matt Tamanini - Dec 14, 2015

In drama, there are three types of conflict: man versus man, man versus self, and man versus nature. In Ron Howard's new film, IN THE HEART OF THE SEA, Chris Hemsworth and Broadway favorite Benjamin Walker face all three types of conflicts as they battle a vengeful white whale. Loosely based on the nonfiction book of the same name by Nathaniel Philbrick, the film tells the story of the Whaleship Essex, which served as partial inspiration for the Herman Melville classic, MOBY DICK. Though Melville's novel is filled with Romantic language and rich, nuanced themes of class, obsession, and race, IN THE HEART OF THE SEA is a slick, depthless film that removes nearly all historical accuracy from this harrowing and terrifying tale. However, what the film lacks in emotion and authenticity, it nearly makes up for in visual majesty and grandeur. (more...)
