Following its hit revival of Marvin's Room, Shattered Globe Theatre continues its 25th anniversary season with Pulitzer Prize finalist Rajiv Joseph's uncommon love story ANIMALS OUT OF PAPER, a vibrant and nuanced peek into the creative process that shapes three lives, directed by Devon de Mayo. ANIMALS OUT OF PAPER will play January 14 - February 27, 2016 at Theater Wit, 1229 W. Belmont Ave. in Chicago. The press opening is Sunday, January 17 at 3 pm. Amphibian Stage Productions (Kathleen Culebro, Artistic Director) has announced the cast and creative team for its first main stage play of the 2016 season, Isaac's Eye by Lucas Hnath. Featuring actors Michael Linden, Greg Holt, Patrick Bynane, and Ashlee Elizabeth Bashore, the play will run Thursday, February 11 through Sunday, March 6 at the Berlene T. and Jarrell R. In its first 50 years, the National Endowment for the Arts (NEA) awarded more than $5 billion in grants to recipients in every state and U.S. jurisdiction, the only arts funder in the nation to do so. Today, the NEA announced awards totaling more than $27.6 million in its first funding round of fiscal year 2016, including an Art Works award of $20,000 to Cherry Lane Theatre to Mentor Project. 59E59 Theaters will welcome the US debut of BirdLand Theatre with the NYC premiere of WIDE AWAKE HEARTS, written by Brendan Gall and directed by Stefan Dzeparoski. WIDE AWAKE HEARTS begins performances on Thursday, January 14 for a limited engagement through Sunday, February 7.  Press opening is Thursday, January 21 at 7:15 PM.  The performance schedule is Tuesday - Thursday at 7:15 PM; Friday at 8:15 PM; Saturday at 2:15 PM & 8:15 PM; and Sunday at 3:15 PM. Please note: there is an added performance on Sunday, January 17 at 7:15 PM. Performances are at 59E59 Theaters (59 East 59th Street, between Park and Madison Avenues). La Jolla Playhouse announces the cast and creative team for Guards at the Taj, the final production of the 2015/2016 season. Written by Pulitzer Prize finalist Rajiv Joseph (Bengal Tiger at the Baghdad Zoo), the show marks Associate Artistic Director Jaime Castañeda's directorial debut at the Playhouse. The production will run February 2 - 28, 2016 (press opening: Wednesday, February 10) in the Sheila and Hughes Potiker Theatre. Just last night, the Harold and Mimi Steinberg Charitable Trust hosted the 2015 Steinberg Playwright Awards honoring Branden Jacobs-Jenkins and Dominique Morisseau at Lincoln Center Theater's Mitzi E. Newhouse Theater (150 West 65th Street, New York, NY 10023). The event featured readings byJocelyn Bioh, Marc Damon Johnson, Jason Dirden, Austin Durant, Dominique Fishback, Lynda Gravatt, Nikiya Mathis, Chris Myers, Carra Patterson, Will Rogers, Michele Shay and Brian Tyree Henry. Ingmar Bergman's NORA -- an adaptation of Henrik Ibsen's classic drama A DOLL'S HOUSE -- will be given its English-language New York debut Off-Broadway this fall when Austin Pendleton directs the production at Cherry Lane Theatre (38 Commerce St.), with previews set to begin November 14 prior to an official press opening November 22. The five-week production runs through December 12. NORA is produced by Cherry Lane Theatre in association with La Femme Theatre Productions.  (more...)
