BWW Interviews: Suzanne Bradbeer Talks Religion, Politics, and THE GOD GAME
by Katricia Lang - Aug 26, 2014

Tom, a charismatic, Republican candidate on the rise is asked to enhance his non-existent religious beliefs to further his political career, which seems an easy enough task for a politician. But, Lisa, his deeply religious wife doesn't think it's so ethical or respectful of her beliefs. How does this human and political drama unfold? You'll have to see the play. But, until then, take a look at the discussion I had with author of the play Suzanne Bradbeer. (more...)

Stark Naked Theatre to Present THE GOD GAME Through 9/20
by BWW News Desk - Aug 04, 2014

Following a critically-acclaimed third season, Stark Naked Theatre Company opens its fourth season on September 5th with the southwest regional premiere of The God Game, written by award-winning playwright Suzanne Bradbeer. Critics praised The God Game in its world premiere earlier this year, calling it "a superb new drama" and "the sort of new work that theatre fans long to see." And just in time for election season, Houston audiences will likewise be enthralled with Stark Naked's production of this exciting political drama. The God Game is a relevant and thought-provoking new play that deftly examines the role of faith on the national political stage. Running through September 20th at Stark Naked Theatre's STUDIO 101, The God Game is directed by Jennifer Dean and features perennial favorites Justin Doran, Philip Lehl, and Kim Tobin-Lehl in the lead roles. BWW Reviews: Stark Naked Theatre Company's THE WINTER'S TALE Makes You Laugh, Swoon, and Cry
by David Clarke - May 11, 2014

William Shakespeare's THE WINTER'S TALE has experienced intermittent popularity. With a complex structure, the play is a tragedy, comedy, and romance. Shakespeare draws large inspiration from Robert Greene's Pandosto, and some scholars claim the play is a parallel to the fall of Anne Boleyn. As we bid farewell to the longest winter in recent memory, Houston's Stark Naked Theatre Company is producing a whimsical and surprisingly touching take on THE WINTER'S TALE. (more...)

BWW Interviews: Philip Lehl and Matt Lents Talk Stark Naked Theatre Company's THE WINTER'S TALE
by Kristina Nungaray - May 01, 2014

Stark Naked Theatre Company is closing their 2013-2014 season with a production of William Shakespeare's THE WINTER'S TALE. As a company that emphasizes text over staging, it is always a treat to see Stark Naked bring works to life on the stage, and with eight cast members playing dozens of roles, this production seems to be no exception. While it has been dubbed one of Shakespeare's most misunderstood plays, THE WINTER'S TALE is sure to have something for everyone, as it is wrought with elements of tragedy, comedy, and romance. Taking time out of their busy schedule, Philip Lehl, who is directing this production as well as stepping into the role of Leontes, and cast member Matt Lents sat down with us to talk about programming Shakespeare for modern audiences and what Houston can expect from Stark Naked Theatre Company's THE WINTER'S TALE. BWW Reviews: Stark Naked Theatre Company's FAITH HEALER Creates Skeptics and Believers
by David Clarke - Jan 26, 2014

When it comes to theatre in Houston, I find that Kim Tobin and Philip Lehl, Co-Executive Directors at Stark Naked Theatre Company, only program plays that everyone should see. Thus, when they announced Brian Friel's FAITH HEALER, a play I was unfamiliar with, I began to immerse myself in any scrap of material I could find about the play, knowing it was a show I ought to know. After catching the final preview performance earlier this week, I felt like the boat must have passed me by. Generally regarded as a masterpiece, Brian Friel's FAITH HEALER didn't impress me in the ways that it seemingly bowls everyone else over. (more...)
