In BY THE WAY, MEET VERA STARK, now playing at Penumbra Theatre as part of their 'Womansong' season, the title character is a black actress in 1930s Hollywood who gets her big break playing a loyal slave in an antebellum Southern melodrama. She imbues the stereotypical role with as much humanity and depth as possible, and so begins a long and successful career, until she mysteriously disappears from the spotlight. Vera is a controversial figure because on the one hand her characters perpetuate the stereotypes seen in movies, but on the other hand she makes her characters as real as possible and has built a successful career for herself and opened doors for black actors in Hollywood. The play examines these issues in a funny, entertaining, innovative way, jumping across time and using video of Vera's first movie. (more...)

Steep Artistic Associate and Jeff Award-winning director Jonathan Berry returns to Steep to direct Dungan's heart-warming and magical exploration of lives lived without regret. Steep and Berry have racked up an impressive string of Midwest premieres, including last year's If There is I Haven't Found It Yet and past hits The Knowledge, Moment and Festen. Steep Theatre Company will be launching a new ticketing program this season aimed at making its work more financially accessible to audiences. Steep will be offering 10% of its tickets to each performance for $10 each.* These general admission 'Access Tickets' will be released to the public two weeks before the opening of each production, and will be available on a first-come, first-served basis. Release dates and times will be announced via Facebook and Twitter, so interested patrons should engage the company through these social media outlets. (more...)

With Sexy Laundry opening tonight, the entire cast roster for the theatre's biggest season is almost complete. Nearly 300 Minnesota artists - including actors, directors, designers and technical operators - will mount 18 productions on two stages. The season lineup confirms Park Square's commitment to the work of women writers like Amy Herzog, Michele Riml and Alice Walker. The casting emphasizes Park Square as a home for local artists of color, from returning favorites like James A. Williams, T.
