The Abbey Theatre, National Theatre of Ireland, Tours New Production of Sean O'Casey's The Plough and the Stars to Columbus October 26-30 In 1916, Ireland raged against British rule, resulting in a six-day, armed rebellion that became known as the Easter Rising. The Plough and the Stars is the story of ordinary lives ripped apart by the idealism of the time, as the residents of a Dublin tenement seek shelter from the violence sweeping through the city's streets. Revolution has finally arrived, but what kind of Ireland awaits? When The Plough and the Stars was first performed at the Abbey Theatre in 1926, the audience rioted. Today regarded as a masterpiece, this provocative play is an indispensable window into the political culture of Ireland at one of its most pivotal moments in history. (more...)

This summer Theatreworks USA, the nation's leading not-for-profit professional theatre for young audiences, presents the Off-Broadway Premiere of Junie B.'s Essential Survival Guide to School. Performances began Wednesday July 20th at the Lucille Lortel Theatre (121 Christopher Street, between Bleecker and Hudson Streets). The Annual Opening Night Benefit is tonight, July 27th (6:30 PM). Michael Presser's organization celebrated TV & Broadway star Daniel Dae Kim (Hawaii Five-O on CBS, currently starring on Broadway as the King of Siam in The King & I thru 6/26) and Broadway actress Andrea Burns (currently appearing in On Your Feet) at their annual awards gala at the Marriott Essex House.  The Beacon Award is presented to individuals in the theatre & Times Square community who have been advocates for increasing audiences for live theatre and understanding the importance of Arts and Education in the lives of New York City's young people. Theatreworks USA will continue its 2016 weekend family performance series this Sunday April 3rd, with Henry and Mudge? was adapted by bookwriter/lyricist Kait Kerrigan and composer/lyricist Brian Lowdermilk (Jonathan Larson Award-winners) and is based on the best-selling books by Cynthia Rylant, illustrated by Sucie Stevenson. Henry and Mudge premiered Off-Broadway in July 2006 at the Lucille Lortel Theatre. This 60-minute musical is recommended for ages 4 and up. Ford's Theatre Director Paul R. Tetreault today announced the Ford's Theatre 2016-2017 season will begin with the new musical Come From Away directed by Christopher Ashley. Productions include Who's Afraid of Virginia Woolf? directed by Aaron Posner and featuring Holly Twyford as Martha; the musical Ragtime, directed by Peter Flynn and featuring an all-local cast including Kevin McAllister, Tracy Lynn Olivera and Nova Y. Payton; and the 35th-annual production of Washington's holiday favorite, A Christmas Carol.
