Arena Stage at the Mead Center for American Theater announces Tony Award winner Phylicia Rashad will join Event Chair and Arena Stage Board member Shawna Watley (Senior Policy Advisor with Holland & Knight) as the Honorary Chair for The Blood Quilt World Premiere Celebration on Thursday, May 7, 2015. FOR COLORED BOYZ ON THE VERGE OF A NERVOUS BREAKDOWN is a choreopoem that was birthed out of frustration, self-examination, and reflection through the eyes of a black man. Influenced by Ntozake Shange's choreopoem for colored girls who have considered suicide when the rainbow's enuf. This isn't a conventional poetry book, play or novel, but a literary theatrical collection of poems and short narratives from the perspective of six black men. (more...)

In response to the seemingly perpetual killings of young black men in America, internationally acclaimed auteur Ping Chong and noted director and dramaturg Talvin Wilks created Collidescope: Adventures in Pre- and Post-Racial America in collaboration with UMD School of Theatre, Dance, and Performance Studies' graduate and undergraduate designers and performers. The show runs tonight, November 7-14 in the Kogod Theatre at The Clarice Smith Performing Arts Center and is a world premiere performance. Conversations with the cast, designers and special panelists follow performances held November 8, 11 and 13, respectively. (more...)
