Everyman Theatre announced today that John McGinty has joined the cast of the upcoming Baltimore premiere of Nina Raine's award-winning play Tribes. The hysterical and touching coming-of-age story is about a young deaf man and his struggle for self-identify and what it truly means to be understood. Mr. McGinty, who is himself deaf, will appear in the role of the main character Billy. The announcement of Mr. McGinty's casting comes during National Deaf History month, which is celebrated from March 13 - April 15.

Berkeley Repertory Theatre announces that today, due to extraordinary ticket demand, it will extend Tribes by seven performances before its first performance. Originally scheduled to run through May 11, audiences now have the opportunity to experience the critically acclaimed family drama by Nina Raine through Sunday, May 18. Directed by Jonathan Moscone, the play follows Billy, a young man who was born deaf into a loquacious and highly opinionated academic family who raised him to lip-read and integrate into the hearing world. When he meets Sylvia - raised by deaf parents and going deaf herself - Billy decides it's time to speak on his own terms and be heard. Tribes start previews Friday, April 11, opens on April 16, and now closes on Sunday, May 18, 2014. This 'thoughtful, well-written domestic drama with something original to say about immigrant families living by old world values in a new world culture' (Variety) received its world-premiere production Off-Broadway at The New Group in 2012. That plot already seems somewhat complicated but there are some surprising developments into Billy's life and then add the fact that he gets his first ever girlfriend and this play spirals completely out of control in the best way possible.

When Billy meets Sylvia, a young woman who is going deaf, he learns what it's truly like to have someone listen and understand, something his family has just never bothered to do. As Billy and Sylvia's relationship grows, they learn from each other and their time spent with those in the deaf and hearing communities. The 2012 Drama Desk Award winner for Outstanding New Play, Tribes is a compelling and relevant drama that creates an important portrait of family dynamics and life's challenges.

Canadian Stage presents the Canadian premiere of Tribes, the sharp, daring and jarringly emotional play by Nina Raine recognized by the 2012 Drama Desk and New York Theatre Critics Circle Awards. There's a ton of dysfunctional family dramadies in contemporary theatre right now, and even on local stages competing against each other - but nothing is like Epic Theatre Company's latest production, "Tribes."

This has been a very strong season for Studio and this explosive production is no exception.
