LIBERACE! Re-Dazzles at Theatre MemphisLIBERACE! Re-Dazzles at Theatre Memphis
by BWW News Desk - Sep 20, 2016

Liberace! returns September 30 and runs until October 16, 2016, in the Next Stage at Theatre Memphis as an encore performance of the 2015 summer fundraising hit. Featuring Gary Beard as the title character, this moving and highly entertaining tribute to the performer and musician famous for his charm, glitz, and glamour relives the highs (and lows) of Liberace's prolific life revealing the real person behind the persona. Interwoven with a rollicking piano score spanning classical and popular music from Chopin to "Chopsticks" and Rachmaninoff to Ragtime, this production will have the audiences cheering the life of a unique American icon. BWW Review: Roundhouse & Olney's ANGELS IN AMERICA: MILLENNIUM APPROACHES an Artistic and Historic TriumphBWW Review: Roundhouse & Olney's ANGELS IN AMERICA: MILLENNIUM APPROACHES an Artistic and Historic Triumph
by Andrew White - Sep 15, 2016

Angels in America:  Millennium Approaches is not just a national treasure, it is a glimpse of history in the making; it is a then-marginalized community seizing the stage, demanding attention, and beginning the long process of changing hearts and minds across the country.  To watch the kaleidoscope of characters, brilliantly portrayed here by some of Washington DC's finest actors, can be incredibly moving.  Not just for the performances themselves, which are memorable indeed, but for how those performances remind us of the changes this play made possible. BWW Review: Forever Entertaining FANTISTICKS Receives a Sterling Production at Pasadena PlayhouseBWW Review: Forever Entertaining FANTISTICKS Receives a Sterling Production at Pasadena Playhouse
by Don Grigware - Sep 13, 2016

The longest running musical in the world The Fantasticks is always at its best when produced and performed with simplicity. When I first saw it in New York in the 60s, it was performed in a cabaret space against a brick wall, with the suspension of a paper moon above. You can't get much simpler than that. In the current revival at the Pasadena Playhouse, the setting is bigger: a dilapidated, war-torn theatre in Southern California, shuttered since 1969, into which the actors enter to create art. The space may be bigger than the original, but the fine work on display maintains simplicity, especially in its message of love. This is a stunning production, one of the very best I have seen, with a magnificent interracial cast under the seamless direction of Seema Sueko. (more...)
