As the third performance in The Shamisen Sessions, a multi-month celebration of the music and history of the distinctively Japanese instrument, Japan Society presents A Salute to Tradition on November 20th. This single-evening showcase features spectacular examples of three of Japan's major classical shamisen performance styles: nagauta (performed predominantly in connection with kabuki), gidayu-bushi (associated with bunraku puppet theater) and jiuta (the style of music developed for tatami salon concerts) as executed by the crème de la crème of Japan's preeminent shamisen players and chanters, including a Living National Treasure (the highest national honor designated by the government of Japan for an artist) and a traditional nihon buyo dancer. NEW YORK, NY - Guo Jian, the Chinese artist who was recently exiled from Beijing to Sydney for making a Tiananmen Square diorama from rotting meat, is now in New York, working on his first post-exile exhibition in collaboration with Emerging Collective, a nascent art NGO at the intersection of activist and avant-garde art. This will be Emerging Collective's first experiment in using an immersive art exhibition to create dialogue between the First World and the Emerging Markets. There was a happening on West 44th Street! For a week, Chita Rivera brought her joyful, razzle-dazzling nightclub act to Birdland, which she calls her favorite room in the city. “These walls are filled with the best music! Playing Birdland just makes me feel cool,” she proclaimed. As if her iconic Broadway career wasn't cool enough, “Chita's Back” was a concert for the history books – with the ever-youthful legend in fine fettle; singing, dancing and telling some of the best insider stories any theater-lover could hope for. Material from Bye Bye Birdie, Chicago, Kiss of the Spider Woman, West Side Story and The Visitwere included, as well as a James Taylor duet with daughter, Lisa Mordente.
