When Margaret Whiting died on January 10, 2011, the news was like a dagger into the heart of the New York cabaret community. Whiting was a beloved singer for almost seven decades, who seemingly delivered every American popular song ever written, conquered almost every musical art form--from Big Band to Country to Musicals to Cabaret, from radio to the recording studio. On top of all that, Whiting worked with and mentored many New York cabaret musical directors and performers, including the late Mary Cleere Haran and K.T. Sullivan, who along with Whiting's daughter Deborah, hosted a 90th birthday Whiting tribute show on Monday night at Carnegie Hall's elegant Weill Recital Hall. Presented by The Mabel Mercer Foundation, for which Sullivan is Artistic Director, It Might As Well Be Spring! A Celebration in Song of the Life of Margaret Whiting was an almost three-hour concert featuring two All-Star teams worth of cabaret stars spanning a few generations. (more...)

Jim Caruso and Billy Stritch have become known as 'The Entertainer's Entertainers,' thanks in part to their long-running Sunday night residency at Bemelmans Bar at The Carlyle Hotel. The musical duo has been joined at the grand piano by Bono, Liza Minnelli and Michael Feinstein, among many others. This past Sunday night's show was a parade of theatrical types, including Linda Lavin, (currently starring in Nicky Silver's Too Much Sun), who belted a torch song. Manhattan Association of Cabarets and Clubs (MAC), dedicated to advancing the art and business of live entertainment, held their 28th Annual MAC Awards celebration last evening at BB King's Blues club in Times Square. Winners in twenty-five categories were announced. The show was hosted by the vivacious singer, band leader, multiple MAC Award winner and 2014 Nominee, Terese Genecco. The gala was produced by Julie Miller and directed by Lennie Watts, the current MAC President. Don Rebic served as Musical Director. On Friday, March 7, Lincoln Center's American Songbook Presented 'Jim Caruso's Cast Party Goes To The Movies,' with two shows at The Allen Room overlooking Columbus Circle and Central Park South. Host Jim Caruso and Musical Director Billy Stritch, along with the Cast Party Symphony Orchestra (David Katzenberg on bass and Daniel Glass on drums) celebrated the Golden Age of Hollywood with a variety show starring a dazzling roster of friends including Christina Bianco, Jeffry Denman, Natalie Douglas, Clarke Thorell, Marilyn Maye, and Jane Monheit.
