BWW Review: Good Things Come In Three's with American Bard's VISIONARY VOICESBWW Review: Good Things Come In Three's with American Bard's VISIONARY VOICES
by Kristen Morale - Feb 19, 2017

Directed by Aimee Todoroff and Tonya Pinkins and now in performances at the Gloria Maddox Theatre, Visionary Voices begins with Susan Glaspell's Trifles, followed by Marita Bonner's Exit: An Illusion and ending with Glaspell's The People - three wonderful plays that are more engaging and poignant in their single acts than many full length shows ever have the opportunity of being. All three plays take place at or near the start of the twentieth century, craftily combining themes as relevant today as they were then - collaborating with suspenseful plots, troubled characters and questionable motives that, when put together, show just how clever Todoroff and Pinkins are. In both the structure of this show as a whole and the effect it has on the audience, the truth here is that Visionary Voices is more than a statement - it is definitely a production worth your time. BWW Review: JANE COMFORT Dances Tales of The CityBWW Review: JANE COMFORT Dances Tales of The City
by Juan Michael Porter II - Jun 19, 2016

A man enters the space and walks the perimeter of The Kitchen's vast stage. Soon the entire arena will be filled with seven bodies locomoting with the purposeful gait of New Yorkers. Patterns form, collisions are narrowly missed, and somehow though it is only walking, we are rapt with anticipation. Anyone who has ever been in a modern dance class has seen this before: walking patterns are nothing new to dance. Very little of what occurs in Jane Comfort's 'You are Here' strikes one as groundbreaking. If anything, the piece is a revisit to the 'Tales of the City' concept that so many choreographers and film-makers enjoy exploring. Strangers in the city meet and are repulsed by each but sometimes they connect and talk. What kept this fresh despite its familiarity at June 16th's performance was the dynamic force exuded by the performers. (more...)

BWW Review: THE THRUSH AND THE WOODPECKER at Kitchen Dog TheaterBWW Review: THE THRUSH AND THE WOODPECKER at Kitchen Dog Theater
by Aaron Zilbermann - Jun 15, 2016

18.1% of adults in the United States are suffering with a diagnosed mental illness. This number does not include substance abuse and it's even higher for women: 21.8%. With these statistics, it's easy to see why so many contemplate how these illnesses might play out in the daily lives of those who are ill, and particularly in the lives of loved ones. The Thrush and the Woodpecker, a play by Steve Yockey and produced by Kitchen Dog Theater in residence at The Undermain Theatre, explores this reality on a deeply personal level as the two primary characters, Brenda Hendricks and Roisin Danner, confront each other with conflicting and often warped realities. The 'Best Book of a Musical' category was not included in the Drama Desk nominations this year.
