Central City Opera to Present THE SOUND OF MUSIC, 8/2-10

Audiences of all ages can hum along to their favorite songs like 'Edelweiss,' 'My Favorite Things' 'Climb Ev'ry Mountain' and title song 'The Sound of Music' when Central City Opera (CCO) brings to Denver one of the most popular Broadway productions of all time, The Sound of Music. Rodgers and Hammerstein II's Tony Award winning musical, which was also an Academy Award winning movie, is Central City Opera's final production for the 2014 Festival. The Sound of Music will be performed at the Ellie Caulkins Opera House in the Denver Performing Arts Complex for seven performances only from August 2 through August 10. Directed by Ken Cazan, who also directed CCO's critically acclaimed production of Dead Man Walking this summer, The Sound of Music will be performed in English with a full live orchestra. ASYO to Perform at Florida State University & in Joint Concert with Columbus State this Spring

The Atlanta Symphony Youth Orchestra (ASYO) has announced a performance at Ruby Diamond Concert Hall at Florida State University (FSU) on Saturday, March 29, 2014, at 7:30 p.m, and a joint concert with the Columbus State University Philharmonic at the Bill Heard Theatre in the RiverCenter for the Performing Arts in Columbus, Ga., on Sunday, April 27, 2014, at 6:45 p.m. The FSU performance will be led by ASYO Music Director Jere Flint, and the joint performance with the CSU Philharmonic will be led by both Mr. Flint and Maestro Paul Hostetter, the Ethel Foley Distinguished Chair in Orchestral Conducting. These concerts are part of a special music education advocacy initiative by the ASYO and are sponsored by the Abraham J. and Phyllis Katz Foundation. (more...)

Joseph Young Named New Assistant Conductor of ASO and Music Director of Youth Symphony

The Atlanta Symphony Orchestra (ASO) announced today that Joseph Young has been named the new ASO Assistant Conductor and Atlanta Symphony Youth Orchestra (ASYO) Music Director. Mr. Young, most recently the Resident Conductor of the Phoenix Symphony, will begin his new post on June 1, 2014. His initial contract is for one year, with the opportunity for an extension. The centenary of British composer Benjamin Britten (1913-1976) has been observed around the world by musicians and institutions of every kind. Music Director James Conlon, whose lifelong fascination with Britten is reflected in his personal three-year performance cycle of the composer's works in America and Europe, is the inspiration for LA Opera's Britten 100/LA: A Celebration, an extensive collaboration featuring performances, conferences and exhibitions presented by a host of organizations throughout the Southland. Britten's centenary year may be drawing to an end, but Britten 100/LA events will continue into early 2014, culminating in LA Opera's February and March performances of Billy Budd. (more...)

Anita Rachvelishvili Returns to the Met as CARMEN in Richard Eyre's Production Tonight, 9/28

Georgian mezzo-soprano Anita Rachvelishvili, who made an acclaimed Met debut as the title character of Bizet's Carmen in 2010, will reprise the role for 14 performances this season, beginning tonight, September 28.
