Maestro Nicholas McGegan and the Baltimore Symphony Orchestra (BSO) will ring in the New Year with a performance of Beethoven's Symphony No. 9 on Friday, January 2 at 8 p.m. and Sunday, January 4 at 3 p.m. at the Joseph Meyerhoff Symphony Hall and Saturday, January 3 at 8 p.m. at The Music Center at Strathmore. McGegan will lead the Orchestra in Beethoven's final symphony with the well-known "Ode to Joy," along with Beethoven's rarely performed Opferlied, his King Stephen Overture and Haydn's The Storm. The work will be featured as part of Dance Visions, an annual constellation of faculty works which runs from February 11 - 15, 2015 in the Claire Trevor Theatre. On Monday, December 1, Minus5 Ice Bar, the coolest bar in Las Vegas, continued its celebrity cocktail program by honoring 'Rockstar of the Art World' Michael Godard, with a new signature cocktail - the We O-Live For This. In addition, the debut of the new limited edition signature cocktail is also a toast to the two new ice encapsulated Michael Godard paintings that are now on display in the Minus5 Monte Carlo V-'ICE'-P room. Godard suited up in one of Minus 5's black fur coats, and entered the bar to admire his paintings 'Black Jack Pimps' and 'Poker Pips,' whilst posing for photos with his line of liquor bottles, Michael Godard Vodka, as well as the signature cocktail. La Traviata will return to the Met stage December 11 with two rotating casts of stars, all of whom are singing their first company performances of the principal roles. Latvian soprano Marina Rebeka, who made a notable debut as Donna Anna in the 2011 new production of Mozart's Don Giovanni, brings her acclaimed Violetta to the Met for the first time in the opening performances, with American tenor Stephen Costello as her impetuous lover Alfredo. Later performances will feature Bulgarian soprano Sonya Yoncheva—currently starring in her first-ever staged performances of Mimì in Puccini's La Bohème—as Violetta, opposite Italian tenor Francesco Demuro as Alfredo. The role of Giorgio Germont, Alfredo's father, will be shared by American baritone Quinn Kelsey and French baritone Ludovic Tézier. Marco Armiliato will lead all performances of Verdi's romantic tragedy this season. Willy Decker's acclaimed production had its Met premiere in 2010. (more...)
