SATURDAY NIGHT LIVE has recently come under fire for its lack of diversity -- specifically its lack of black female performers. The show responded to the outcry in its opening skit with guest host Kerry Washington last month. The not-so-serious scene featured the actress playing Michelle Obama, Oprah and Beyonce in one setting. But now SNL is getting serious.

Today Dallas Theater Center's Project Discovery program received the National Arts and Humanities Youth Program Award from First Lady Michelle Obama. The award recognizes exemplary after-school and out-of-school time programs from across the country and is the highest national honor awarded to such programs. Project Discovery is one of 12 programs to receive the award this year.

President Barack Obama appointed seven new members of the President's Committee on the Arts and the Humanities. They will join 30 other private members appointed by the President and twelve federal representatives, whose agencies have cultural programs such as the National Endowments for the Arts and the Humanities, the Institute of Museum and Library Services, U.S. Department of Education, the Smithsonian Institution, the Library of Congress, the National Gallery of Art and the John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts. A swearing-in ceremony will be held at the Supreme Court with Justice Kagan presiding.

The White House today announced that the Baltimore Symphony Orchestra's OrchKids program is one of 12 recipients of the 2013 National Arts and Humanities Youth Program Awards, the signature program of the President's Committee on the Arts and the Humanities. The BSO's flagship community engagement program is recognized for its effectiveness in developing learning and life skills in young people by fostering arts and arts education in their communities. Later today in a ceremony in the East Room of the White House, First Lady Michelle Obama will present the award to OrchKids Artistic Director Dan Trahey and eighth grader Asia Palmer, who has participated in OrchKids since 2008. OrchKids is a year-round after-school music program designed to create social change and nurture promising futures for youth in Baltimore neighborhoods. In partnership with the Baltimore City Public School system, OrchKids serves more than 750 students spanning pre-kindergarten through eighth grades across five Title I schools in West and East Baltimore.
