Maestro Nicholas McGegan and the Baltimore Symphony Orchestra (BSO) will ring in the New Year with a performance of Beethoven's Symphony No. 9 on Friday, January 2 at 8 p.m. and Sunday, January 4 at 3 p.m. at the Joseph Meyerhoff Symphony Hall and Saturday, January 3 at 8 p.m. at The Music Center at Strathmore. McGegan will lead the Orchestra in Beethoven's final symphony with the well-known "Ode to Joy," along with Beethoven's rarely performed Opferlied, his King Stephen Overture and Haydn's The Storm. SAN FRANCISCO, December 5, 2014 – Music Director Michael Tilson Thomas and the San Francisco Symphony's live concert recording of Leonard Bernstein's complete score for the musical West Side Story is nominated for a Grammy® Award in the category of Best Musical Theater Album. The album features a stellar Broadway cast including Cheyenne Jackson and Alexandra Silber, and members of the San Francisco Symphony Chorus. The performances were recorded live at Davies Symphony Hall in late June and early July 2013 after Michael Tilson Thomas and the San Francisco Symphony became the first orchestra to receive permission from all four West Side Storyrights-holders to perform and record the musical score in its entirety in a concert setting. Led by guest conductor Asher Fisch, the performances feature Schumann's Symphony No. 2, Berg's Seven Early Songs, and Strauss's Tod und Verklärung (Death and Transfiguration) with mezzo-soprano Michelle DeYoung. Both concerts include Meet the Music, a free, interactive pre-concert discussion held one hour prior to concert start time in Uihlein Hall today and in Anello Atrium on Saturday. Music Director Michael Tilson Thomas conducts the San Francisco Symphony (SFS)-currently celebrating their 20th season together-in two concerts at Carnegie Hall on Wednesday, November 19 at 8:00 p.m. and Thursday, November 20 at 8:00 p.m. in Stern Auditorium / Perelman Stage. The programs feature specialties of the orchestra and conductor and include Mahler's Symphony No. 7 in E Minor on November 19 and the New York premiere of American composer Samuel Adams's Drift and Providence; Prokofiev's Violin Concerto No. 2 in G Minor, Op. 63 with soloist Gil Shaham; and Ravel's complete Daphnis et Chloe on November 20. The concerts are part of a seven-city US tour from November 12-22 that follows the release of their new recording, Masterpieces in Miniature, out on November 11 on SFS Media. The orchestra's recording of Mahler's Symphony No. 7 led by Mr. Tilson Thomas as part of their Mahler recording project won two Grammy Awards in 2007. (more...)
