OSU Composer, Teacher and Musician, Mark Flugge, Dies at 52

Following a valiant 22-month struggle, Mark Flugge succumbed to major undiagnosed hearing issues and depression early Sunday morning, May 11. He expressed the hope that his music will live on, and heartfelt love to all of his many friends, family, students, and colleagues. A private service is being scheduled, with a public memorial concert in celebration of his life and music at a later date. (more...)

Lincoln Center Announces OUT OF DOORS 2014 Summer Festival Lineup; Runs 7/20-8/10

The schedule for this summer's Lincoln Center Out of Doors festival, which runs from July 20 to August 10, was announced today by Bill Bragin, Lincoln Center's Director of Public Programming. Nearly 100 free performances will take place across the plazas of Lincoln Center during three weeks. A special Memorial Concert for Pete and Toshi Seeger on July 20 will be followed by the official opening concert on July 23 with Larry Harlow's Hommy: A Latin Opera, the landmark work's first performance in 40 years. Abrons Art Center to Stage Tony Torn's UBU SINGS UBU, 4/9-26

Actor/director Tony Torn and Julie Atlas Muz star in Ubu Sings Ubu, an immersive theatrical mash up of Alfred Jarry's Ubu Roi and the songs of experimental cult band Pere Ubu. Adapted from a version of the original French text, and run through the Google Translateengine, Torn and company are fueled by the giddy, angular new wave rock of Pere Ubu, the cult band whose name and style were inspired by the play. Torn, who co-directs with Dan Safer of Witness Relocation, plays Pere Ubu while Muz is Mere Ubu, in a bizarre parody of Shakespeare's Macbeth, set in Poland instead of Scotland. (more...)

The Second Time Around for FIRST TIME FEST is set for today, April 3 - 7, 2014, and it will be based at their new home. NeueHouse (110 East 25th St.). NeueHouse will be the location for panels, workshops, selected film presentations, parties and the filmmaker lounge. Most screenings, including all the competition films, will take place at the AMC Loews Village 7 (11th St. & Third Ave.) (more...)

In advance of the 2014 Olympic Winter Games, NBCUniversal is opening a brand new state-of-the-art headquarters for its west coast news and television operations on the Universal Studios lot in Los Angeles. Starting February 2, NBC4 Southern California / KNBC was the first to broadcast from the new 150,000-square foot technologically-advanced facility, to be followed by the Los Angeles bureaus of NBC News, CNBC, MSNBC and Telemundo News as well as Telemundo 52 / KVEA later this spring. Members of the Student Doctor Network who know Burnett is an Army doctor, sometimes ask him about military service. He says it's a decision each person has to make for themselves. For himself, I love practicing medicine in the Army. It's an integrated team environment that allows me to coordinate care seamlessly for the patient. As an Army physician I don't need to worry about all the administrative hassles I had as a civilian physician. I can focus on being a doctor and caring for my patients. He also enjoys the diversity available in Army medicine, including leadership, teaching, and research opportunities. (more...)
