The 2010 2011 Kravis On Broadway season boasts a powerful line up which includes The New Mel Brooks Musical Young Frankenstein and straight from the great white way, a revival of West Side Story. Add to this, NETworks Presents Disney's Beauty & The Beast, Dreamgirls and The Color Purple, all making their West Palm Beach debut at the Kravis Center. The New Mel Brooks Musical YOUNG FRANKENSTEIN, the new musical comedy from the creative team of the 12-time Tony Award® winning smash The Producers, will celebrate its Los Angeles premiere at the Pantages Theatre with a limited two week engagement from July 27 - August 8, 2010.

Bay City Players will hold auditions for its upcoming production, LAUGHTER ON THE 23RD FLOOR, by Neil Simon, on Sunday and Monday, August 8 & 9, 2010 at 7:00 p.m. Auditions will be held at Bay City Players, 1214 Columbus Avenue, in Bay City. The production, co-directed by Tina Sills and Michael Dunckel, will be performed September 24-26 and September 30-October 3, 2010.

Sutton Foster's engagement in the Orange County Performing Arts Center's 2010-2011 Cabaret Series has been moved to January 6 - 9, 2011 from its originally announced dates of February 17 - 20, 2011. The comedic genius of Mel Brooks shines in this musical stage version of his original movie. Down and out Broadway producer, Max Bialystock gets a visit from a chronically nervous accountant, Leo Bloom. While inspecting Max's questionable books, Leo poses the purely academic notion that a producer could make more money with a flop than with a hit. Max immediately enlists the reluctant Leo as his partner. They read mountains of scripts until they discover Springtime for Hitler, written by a former Nazi who adored the Fuhrer. What could be less appealing? Next they hire the most ridiculously outrageous director to guarantee a monumental failure. Max uses his unique charm with wealthy old ladies to raise the funds, while Leo runs the office with the newly hired assistant, Ulla, a Swedish bombshell. They are sure to be unsuccessful and rich. They look forward to opening night boos, but before the curtain closes it is apparent that the show is a huge hit! They can never repay the investors. Where did they go right?

There is no denying that Mel Brooks is a comedy legend. Brooks' oeuvre--particularly his hilarious film work--harkens back to a time when getting laughs meant less cynical snark but, rather, more outlandish farce and the endless use of double-entendres and wordplay. YOUNG FRANKENSTEIN, Brooks' stage musical iteration of his cult hit film--now performing at the Pantages Theatre through August 8--features plenty of Brooks' signature silliness, now paired with several relatively amusing songs, all penned by Brooks. However, the show somehow just stops short of becoming the universally beloved musical that Brooks' earlier show (The Producers) managed to be so much more effortlessly. But rest assured, this show will still coax a lot of smiles and many loud bursts of laughter out of you.

The lights are shining brightly at The Orpheum Theatre again this year. I revert to childhood when I see a Mel Brooks movie or show. The sillier the better: the sight gags, the double entendres, the more the merrier. The New Mel Brooks Musical, Young Frankenstein is a real rip-roaring hoot of a show from start to finish with a great cast and zippy fast-paced direction from Susan Stroman.
