BWW Reviews: Mildred's Umbrella Theater Company's CARNIVAL ROUND THE CENTRAL FIGURE is Bold and Innovative
by David Clarke - Nov 11, 2013

Mildred's Umbrella Theater Company is currently producing Diana Amsterdam's new, darkly comic drama CARNIVAL ROUND THE CENTRAL FIGURE. As part of their mission, Mildred's Umbrella puts on 'bold, innovative and fresh theatrical works,' and CARNIVAL ROUND THE CENTRAL FIGURE perfectly upholds this banner. The work is a cacophony of noise and events told in a seemingly stream-of-consciousness chronology as it leaps through time and place with the bat of an eye. Some parts occur 10 years prior to the central plot, while others occur simultaneously. In effect, Diana Amsterdam's writing and Jennifer Decker's directing creates a living, breathing fever dream or bizarre, almost surreal events that deal with how we cope with mortality and death.

BWW Reviews: Black Lab Theatre's THE SUBMISSION - A Must See Topical, Realistic Dramedy
by David Clarke - Jan 14, 2013

Looking ahead to the Chinese New Year, 2013 is the year of the snake. With my American and Western preconceived notions about snakes and their characteristics, I can't think of a better play to champion right now. Black Lab Theatre's Regional Premiere of Jeff Talbott's THE SUBMISSION is a wholly realistic one-act that features one of the most engaging and unflinchingly honest portrayals of tangibly real Americans I have ever seen. And his character Danny would be a perfect example of what we Westerners think of as a snake.

Houston's Black Lab Theatre Presents THE SUBMISSION, Now thru 1/27
by BWW News Desk - Jan 11, 2013

In a regional premiere, Black Lab Theatre presents THE SUBMISSION, the award-winning, controversial comic-drama that questions the reality of America's post racial world. THE SUBMISSION revolves around Danny Larson, a white gay playwright who lies about his true identity in a playwriting festival to gain an affirmative action advantage and then hires an African American actress to impersonate his nome de plume.

As temperatures dropped on January 2, 2013, I sat down with Jordan Jaffe, Ross Bautsch, Matt Benton, Candice D'Meza, and Darcy Cadman to discuss Black Lab Theatre's upcoming production of Jeff Talbot's controversial and comedic drama, THE SUBMISSION.

BWW Reviews: NEXT FALL - Stirring, Poignant & All Together Beautiful
by David Clarke - Aug 27, 2012

Ron Jones, Founding Artistic Director of Celebration Theatre, deserves endless praise for the bold mission and theatrical experiences he is fearlessly bringing to the Houston Theatre Scene. Dedicated to producing compelling plays that handle LGBT issues with sensitivity and integrity, Ron Jones is opening Celebration Theatre's inaugural season with Geoffrey Nauffts' riveting and emotionally charged drama NEXT FALL. The small audience gathered at Obsidian Art Space at the performance I saw witnessed history in the making, and hopefully Celebration Theatre will grow a loyal audience and experience many years of success in Houston.
