Recognized as a leading voice in choral and musical theatre composition, composer/theatre-maker/singer Marisa Michelson is hailed for writing and/or performing profound works with a rich tapestry of complicated choral and musical stylings. Michelson's 2018 season begins February 1-3, 2018, with the world premiere of The Desire/Divinity Project, a two-part musical piece featuring Michelson and her vocal performance ensemble, Constellation Chor, live orchestration, and dance choreographed by #Mamaisamaker's Emma Crane Jaster (Loft Opera). Directed by Ethan Heard (Heartbeat Opera) and originally choreographed by Chase Brock (currently by Emma Crane Jaster), this Project was developed by Michelson while researching mind/body/spirit practices with virtuosic singing as an artist-in-residence at Judson Memorial Church. Part One: Song of Songs of Songs explores the relationship between the sensual and the sacred, the body and the spirit, through an exegesis of the Western world's oldest erotic poem, Song of Songs.

MasterVoices presents Our America a unique program taking audiences on a journey through the contributions immigrants have made to the tapestry of American music on Wednesday, March 7, 2018 at 7:00 p.m. at the Great Hall at The Cooper Union. Conceived by MasterVoices Artistic Director Ted Sperling, the program spans multiple genres and centuries, ranging from arrangements of the spirituals Gospel Train, Wayfaring Stranger, I've Been in the Storm So Long, and Ain't That Good News ; Irving Berlin's Give Me Your Tired, Your Poor, and Let Me Sing and I'm Happy, ; selections by Victor Herbert, Kurt Weill, Leonard Bernstein, and Gershwin; and new works by Jerusalem native and BMI Lehman Engel Musical Theatre Workshop member Daniel Rein and award-winning Chinese American composer Randall Eng.

The upcoming 2018 season cements her role as a vital contemporary artist with the world premiere of three works: The Desire/Divinity Project by Constellation Chor February 1-3, One Thousand Nights and One Day musical April 2-29, and Naamah's Ark oratorio featuring Tony Award winner Victoria Clark concluding The River to River Festival June 17. Houston Grand Opera (HGO) continues its series of holiday operas with the world premiere presentation of The House without a Christmas Tree by the widely admired composer/librettist team of Ricky Ian Gordon and Royce Vavrek, in the HGO Resilience Theater at the George R. Brown Convention Center. The opera is based on the uplifting story by Gail Rock and the beloved 1972 television film of the same name about a family that is healed by the holiday spirit. A precocious daughter struggles to understand her father's resentment of the holidays and longs for a beautiful Christmas tree like other families have, to make her house look happy. The opera includes a new setting of the carol Gather Around the Christmas Tree, sung by a juvenile chorus. Tickets for the new venue are available at HGO.org. Group discounts are available. Parking for HGO's performances will be available at the Avenida North garage located at 1815 Rusk Street, across from HGO's new venue. After a wildly successful Halloween Drag Extravaganza at National Sawdust and a sold-out performance on The High Line, HEARTBEAT OPERA presents its third annual Spring Festival, this year at Baruch Performing Arts Center from May 20–28, 2017. Heartbeat will premiere 90-minute versions of two operatic masterpieces, both radically staged and re-orchestrated: Puccini's BUTTERFLY and Bizet's CARMEN.
