Dancer Freddie Huddlestone climbs the side of the Dominion Theatre stage then taps - upside down - across the ceiling and back down the other side of the stage at WEST END HEROES at the Dominion Theatre. The amazing routine, choreographed by Matt Flint, was the highlight of STEP IN TIME, a high-energy tap dance tribute by The West End Heroes Dancers, to Disney's Mary Poppins, which this year is celebrating 50 years since its release. Following the enormous success of the semi-staged performance of My Fair Lady at the Proms in 2012, John Wilson returns to perform Cole Porter's Tony Award-winning musical Kiss Me, Kate. Joining John Wilson and the John Wilson Orchestra, Broadway stalwarts Ben Davis, Alexandra Silber, Tony Yazbeck and West End star Louise Dearman lead the cast in an irreverent reworking of Shakespeare's The Taming of the Shrew -- a play within a play. This is the BBC Proms debut for all four performers as they sing the energetic score in its original 1948 arrangement. (more...)

New musical theatre is often showcased in fringe venues to test the water and see if the show could have success on a larger platform. Water Babies, however, has its first outing on the stage of one of the largest producing houses in the country, the Curve in Leicester. The production values are extremely high and it is evident that there is a lot of belief in this project. Judging by what I witnessed last night, this production absolutely needs and deserves a future. (more...)
