BWW Interview: Exclusive Scoop on John Bucchino's Latest Musical- ESAURA

Broadway composer and lyricist John Bucchino and bookwriter Mads Nielsen's Danish-American romantic musical drama ESAURA, recently conluded a Fall 2013 run at the Fredericia Teater. The plot of the new musical is based on a free adaptation of the 1905 novel by Carl E. Simonsen 'Abraham Fournais' and has parallels to the classic tale of Romeo and Juliet. The musical drama is set during the aftermath of the Battle of Fredericia and tells a fascinating story about human relationships. In short, it is a story with universal appeal played out in a Danish historical setting. Bucchino recently took the time to chat with BroadwayWorld about how the show got its start, what's in store for it's future, and more. Check out the full interview below! (more...)

WICKED Sets New Broadway Record With $3.2 Million Gross in One Week

Having recently celebrated its 10th Anniversary on Broadway, the blockbuster musical WICKED continues to defy gravity, setting a new Broadway record for the highest one-week gross with a box office take of $3,201,333, for the week ending December 29, 2013. The first and only Broadway musical to gross over $3 million in one week, WICKED has broken the previous record, $2,947,142, which it also held (week ending December 30, 2012), and which had earlier been held by Spider-Man: Turn off the Dark, with a gross of $2,941,794 (week ending January 1, 2012). In 2013, I turned 28, which apparently is one of several years at the end of your 20s where basically your life hits the fan and sudden changes surround you. I looked around, and everyone else seemed so happy. Then, I breathed and realized that I have plenty to be happy about. In 2013 I became BroadwayWorld.com's official theatre recording critic and have been exposed to some incredible albums since accepting that title. Some I have loved; others I have not. Regardless of my feelings towards the albums themselves, these are the top 20 songs from 2013 I simply cannot get out of my mind. (more...)

The 25th anniversary celebration of GYPSY OF THE YEAR, the culmination of six weeks of extraordinary fundraising by 56 participating Broadway, Off-Broadway, and national touring companies, raised an amazing $4,343,234 for Broadway Cares/Equity Fights AIDS. The grand total was announced Tuesday, December 10, at this year's GYPSY OF THE YEAR, which included an array of original dances, songs, and skits performed by more than 250 'gypsies,' the most talented singers and dancers in the ensembles of Broadway and Off-Broadway shows. Mary-Louise Parker, David Hyde Pierce & More Set for Church of St. Paul and St. Andrew Holiday Benefit Today; Victoria Clark Hosts

Upper West Siders, Victoria Clark, Mary-Mitchell Campbell, Ricky Ian Gordon, Kelli O'Hara, Greg Naughton, and David Hyde Pierce are joined by other Broadway favorites, Kimilee Bryant, Brian Cross, Hunter Ryan Herdlicka, Lindsay Mendez, Mary Louise Parker, and Cantor Ari Priven along with singer-songwriter Jane Kelly Williams to celebrate the holidays and raise funds for much needed repairs for the historic Church of St. Paul and St. Andrew. Tonight, the church will be filled with song and jubilee from this star-studded cast. The benefit is produced by Gina Boonshoft and directed by Barbara Grecki.
