New York Live Arts today announced further programming details for the suite of all-new world premiere works created by 2012-2014 Resident Commissioned Artist(RCA) Kyle Abraham, including a fourth, previously unannounced ensemble work. Known for creating “voluptuous movement phrases with touches of dance-theater” (The New York Times) Abraham and his company, Abraham.In.Motion, will present four works-one evening-length, two ensemble works and one trio-over two programs titled The Watershed and When the Wolves Came In at New York Live Arts from September 23 through 27 and September 30 through October 4, 2014. Exploring two totemic triumphs in the international history of the civil rights, the 150 year anniversary of the Emancipation Proclamation and the 20 year anniversary of the abolishment of apartheid in South Africa, the works feature visual design by acclaimed conceptual artist Glenn Ligon and original music performed live by world renowned jazz artist Robert Glasper, accompanied by two musicians and a vocalist. Wendy Whelan, whom The New York Times has called 'America's greatest contemporary ballerina,' has danced with New York City Ballet for 29 years. With the company, she has mastered Balanchine's neo-classical repertory, dance classics such as Sleeping Beauty and Swan Lake and created works with many of today's leading choreographers. Having reached the height of her field, Whelan, now 46, is embarking on a groundbreaking journey at an age when most ballerinas simply retire from the stage. She has launched Wendy Whelan New Works Initiative, which begins with Restless Creature, a suite of four duets, each with its own distinct style and artistry, created by and danced with Kyle Abraham, Joshua Beamish, Brian Brooks and Alejandro Cerrudo. The work will tour to nine cities this spring including New York, London and Boston from March 18-July 26. (more...)

RIOULT Dance NY, a leading American modern dance company with a classic sensibility, announces its eight-performance New York Season June 4-9, 2013 at The Joyce Theater. The Season includes the World Premiere of Artistic Director/Choreographer Pascal Rioult's newest work, Iphigenia (working title), a dance drama inspired by the Greek heroine of the same name from Euripides' 'Iphigenia in Aulis.' The piece was created in collaboration with Composer Michael Torke and features his newly commissioned score, which will be performed live by the Camerata New York Orchestra. The Season program also includes the critically acclaimed On Distant Shores (2011), the powerful Prelude to Night (2002), and one of the company's signature works, Bolero (2002). (more...)
