BWW Reviews: Brian Brooks Opens Joyce Run With PremieresBWW Reviews: Brian Brooks Opens Joyce Run With Premieres
by Lauren Wingenroth - Jun 4, 2015

Brian Brooks opened his too-short Joyce Theater run with Divisions, a piece comprised of sheets of wood, one for each of his six dancers. At first, strict formality dictates the invisible maze the dancers erect as they glide through the space, their sheets slicing along beside them. Their sheets certainly divide and limit - sometimes actively, sometimes passively - but they also connect and enable, providing links between the dancers as they switch and share. Division loses its form as the sheets lose their prevalence and are replaced by human contact. Relationships don't seem to change when the dancers are free of the physical divisions - their presence lingers, suggesting that the divisions aren't contained by the physical objects at all.  Without the absoluteness these objects demanded at first, however, the end of the piece drones on, unhelped by the quiet, homogeneous kinetic quality of the piece (the dancers' ability to gloss over the effort of manipulating the sheets is initially peaceful and satisfying, later boring) and Jerome Begin's score, which at times seems to imitate the sound of the wooden sheets as they scrape against the floor.
