Last night, after a week of competition that brought 40 young singers from 17 nations to Los Angeles, Placido Domingo announced that Rachel Willis-Sorensen, an American soprano, and Mario Chang, a Guatemalan tenor, took the top prizes tonight in the 22nd edition of Operalia, the World Opera Competition. Hosted by LA Opera at the Dorothy Chandler Pavilion, the weeklong contest culminated tonight in a Gala Finals Concert-featuring the LA Opera Orchestra conducted by Mr. Domingo at the Dorothy Chandler Pavilion-which was streamed live on Medici TV. Mr. Domingo will perform the baritone role of Athanaël, a monk whose determination to save the soul of a beautiful courtesan transforms into an unholy obsession. Known for an intensely moving portrayal of the title character, Furlanetto stars in this musically lush and romantic homage to Cervantes' iconic hero, Don Quixote. Don Quichotte is sung in French with English SURTITLES, and runs for seven performances at the Four Seasons Centre for the Performing Arts today, May 9 and May 11, 14, 17, 20, 22, 24, 2014. LA Opera is collaborating with Classical KUSC to produce the seventh consecutive season of LA Opera on Air, a weekly broadcast series of LA Opera performances recorded live at the Dorothy Chandler Pavilion. Beginning with Bizet's Carmen at 10am on Saturday, May 17, 2014, the weekly series will be hosted by KUSC's Duff Murphy and will feature six operas from LA Opera's 2013/14 season. The series will be broadcast locally on Classical KUSC 91.5FM, its repeater stations (see below) and also streamed live online at www.KUSC.org. (more...)
