New York Philharmonic Continues PROJECT 19

The New York Philharmonic will continue the initiative commemorating the centennial of the 19th Amendment with commissions of new works by 19 women composers. Project 19 launched in February 2020 with live performances of six World Premieres (three for full orchestra, three for smaller ensembles).

David Lang's PRISONER OF THE STATE To Be Released in June

Principal Trombone Joseph Alessi first performed the solo on tenor tuba in 1986 under Leonard Bernstein. In this performance from 2017 under then Music Director Alan Gilbert, Alessi performs the same solo on the English Baritone, which he believes provides a closer version of the sound Mahler was looking for.

The New York Philharmonic has announced plans for the 2020–21 season, Jaap van Zweden's third as Music Director. Van Zweden once again conducts a wide range of repertoire, including four World Premieres, a US Premiere, and symphonic cornerstones. As in his first two seasons as Music Director, he continues to connect with New Yorkers through impactful projects, performances, and collaborations with other cultural institutions, and conducts the Orchestra on an Asian tour.

Over 150 musicians stood together at Dante Park, directly across from Lincoln Center, to demonstrate solidarity with their colleagues on strike at the Chicago Symphony Orchestra. A group of thirty brass musicians from the Metropolitan Opera, the New York Philharmonic, and the New York City Ballet performed, conducted by Joseph Alessi, Principal Trombone of the New York Philharmonic. The Local 802 AFM musicians spanned every genre from Broadway to classical to indie, and the musicians were joined by their fellow union members from Actors' Equity, American Guild of Musical Artists, IATSE Local One, IATSE Local 764, the New York City Central Labor Council, AFL-CIO, SAG-AFTRA NY, and the Stage Directors and Choreographers Society.

The Shanghai Orchestra Academy (SOA) hosted a Flute Festival June 27 - 29, 2018 with the support from AEP-China program. Robert Langevin, the principal flutist of the New York Philharmonic, hand in hand with Zhe Hu, the principal flutist of Shanghai Symphony Orchestra, led young flutists from all over China to celebrate the 'art of flute' during the three-day festival.
