Mozart's DIE ZAUBERFLOTE Opens 10/6 at the Met

Mozart's final opera, Die Zauberflöte, returns to the Met October 6 for its first full-length performances in German in five seasons. Julie Taymor's imaginative production will be conducted by Adam Fischer and star English tenor Toby Spence as the hero Tamino; South African soprano Pretty Yende as the princess Pamina in her first Met performances since her star-making 2013 company debut; Macedonian soprano Ana Durlovski in her Met debut as Pamina's mother, the terrifying Queen of the Night; Austrian baritone Markus Werba as Papageno, the hapless birdcatcher who is caught up in Tamino's quest; American bass-baritone Ryan McKinny as the mysterious Speaker of the Temple; and German bass René Pape as the Queen of the Night's nemesis, Sarastro.

Opera Philadelphia opens its 40th Anniversary Season in grand fashion this September, with a New Production of The Barber of Seville. Rossini's comic masterpiece will be presented in five performances at the Academy of Music, today, Sept. 26 through Oct. 5, with a FREE HD broadcast on a giant screen at Independence National Historical Park on Saturday, Sept. 27.

The Cooperstown Summer Music Festival finale on Sunday, August 24 at 7:30 pm offers dance-infused chamber music by Bartok, Brown, Byrd, Schubert, Strauss, and del Aguila. Performers are the Momenta Quartet; Linda Chesis, flute; Moran Katz, clarinet; Olga Vinokur, piano. The concert will be held in the ballroom of the Otesaga Hotel in Cooperstown.

The New York Philharmonic will present the second season of THE ART OF THE SCORE: Film Week at the Philharmonic September 16-20, 2014, offering two concert programs of film music - La Dolce Vita: The Music of Italian Cinema and Charlie Chaplin's Modern Times: The Tramp at 100 - that highlight some of the genre's most distinctive uses of music. Music Director Alan Gilbert opens the New York Philharmonic's 2014-15 season on September 16 with the Opening Gala Concert, La Dolce Vita: The Music of Italian Cinema, with special guest Martin Scorsese, Oscar-winning director and film preservation proponent, who will deliver welcoming and introductory remarks. The Houston Chamber Choir's 18th season comes to a classic close with Brahms's popular Liebeslieder Waltzes and The Beatles's chart-toppers in brilliant settings by famed arranger Yumiko Matsuoka.
