In a new dynamic collaboration, Ray Anderson and Sarah Weaver pose the great question, 'What is the point of being'? in a large-ensemble piece that explores the primary, universal concern of metaphysics through metaphorical, existential, humorous, emotional, and multidimensional perspectives. Featuring a powerhouse ensemble comprised of some of the finest improvisational performers today, The Point Being aspires to move from inner awareness to inner peace, and on then to a more peaceful world. The Point Being is presented with support from the Faculty in the Arts, Humanities, and Social Sciences (FAHSS) Research Initiatives Fund, Stony Brook University. (more...)

The Thelonious Monk Institute of Jazz today announced the 2013 Thelonious Monk International Jazz Saxophone Competition and All-Star Gala Concert will take place at the Kennedy Center Eisenhower Theater at 7:30 p.m. on Monday, September 16. Saturday, February 2, 2013 marks Symphony Space's fourth annual The Music of Now Marathon. The genre-defying eight-hour concert (4 pm - midnight) is curated by Artistic Director Laura Kaminsky and hosted by WQXR's Terrance McKnight in the Leonard Nimoy Thalia Theater. From electronic experimentation to post-minimalism, spectralist sonorities to Latin jazz, the Music of Now Marathon offers an outstanding opportunity to discover a broad range of new music by emerging and established creators.
