Guest vocalists Dominique Labelle (soprano), Susanne Mentzer (mezzo-soprano), Adam Diegel (tenor), and David Pittsinger (bass-baritone) join the Columbus Symphony, Columbus Symphony Chorus, and Music Director Jean-Marie Zeitouni for a one-night-only season opening performance of Beethoven's Symphony No. 9, the world renowned Ode to Joy. The evening's program will also include Handel's grand ode for the coronation of England's King George II and a gentle motet by Mozart.

Orchestra of St. Luke's (OSL) announces the release of the seventh album on its record label St. Luke's Collection: a live recording of Schoenberg and Riehn's masterful chamber arrangement of Gustav Mahler's Das Lied von der Erde. The work was performed to great acclaim in September 2011 by St. Luke's Chamber Ensemble with conductor George Manahan, mezzo-soprano Jennifer Johnson Cano and tenor Paul Groves at Baryshnikov Arts Center (BAC).

Russian bass Ildar Abdrazakov [ahb-drah-ZAH-koff], fresh from his appearances with Italian maestro Riccardo Muti at the Salzburg Festival, commences a powerhouse 2012-13 season with two iconic Mozart roles. First, in September, the two-time Grammy Award-winner appears as the infamous anti-hero of Don Giovanni at the Washington National Opera; then, in October and November, he sings the title roles of Le nozze di Figaro and Don Giovanni at the Metropolitan Opera.

OSL Announces New Artistic Leadership

The Co-Founder and former Chairman of IMG Artists Charles Hamlen will become Orchestra of St. Luke's (OSL) new Vice President for Artists & Programs, effective October 2012. In this role, Mr. Hamlen will plan repertoire and artistic collaborations for OSL's annual orchestra series at Carnegie Hall, chamber music series at The Morgan Library & Museum and Brooklyn Museum, summer residency at Caramoor International Music Festival, Subway Series, OSL@DMC and other special projects. Mr. Hamlen will follow Elizabeth Ostrow, the current Vice President, Artistic Planning, who has worked at OSL for the past 16 years.

Hartt Community Division Welcomes New Celesti Sondato Conductor Bryan Zaros for 2012-13 Season

The Hartt School Community Division (HCD) announces Celesti Sondato's 4th season and a new music director, Bryan Zaros of Avon, Conn. An accomplished and award winning conductor, Mr. Zaros has conducted choirs in nine different countries and has performed at some of the most celebrated performance venues, including the Metropolitan Opera House, Avery Fisher Hall, Carnegie Hall, and on NBC's Today show. Celesti Sondato is the HCD Adult Chamber Choir, an auditioned SATB ensemble with a tradition of performing varied choral literature, premiering new works, and collaborating with local ensembles throughout the year.

Naxos Canadian Classics announces the September 25, 2012 release of Dreamscapes, a world premiere recording of three works by Edmonton-born composer Vivian Fung. The recording features Ms. Fung's acclaimed Violin Concerto (2011) and Piano Concerto "Dreamscapes" (2009), performed by Metropolis Ensemble with conductor Andrew Cyr, violinist Kristin Lee, and pianist Conor Hanick; and her Glimpses for prepared piano (2006), performed by Mr. Hanick. The concertos, both commissioned by Metropolis Ensemble, were recorded at Seiji Ozawa Hall at Tanglewood and produced by Tim Martyn.

2012 Opera News Awards Honorees Announced

The editors of Opera News have announced the honorees for the 2012 Opera News Awards, paying tribute to five superb artists who have made an invaluable contribution to the art form: sopranos Mirella Freni and Dawn Upshaw, countertenor David Daniels, baritone Simon Keenlyside, and bass-baritone Eric Owens. The eighth annual Opera News Awards ceremony will take place on Sunday, April 21 at The Plaza in New York City. All the winners - and a host of the city's cultural, civic, and social luminaries - will be present at the gala awards dinner, which will feature celebrity presenters speaking about the awardees and introducing video performance clips.
