Qi Shu Fang Peking Opera Company to Present 15th Annual Peking Opera Festival, 9/20

New York, NY (August 2, 2015) – Qi Shu Fang Peking Opera Company (Qi Shu Fang, President; Ding Mei Kui, Artistic Director), recipient of National Heritage Fellowship for the Arts, will present the 15th Annual Peking Opera Festival and the U.S. Premiere of  The Three Inch Lotus featuring Wei Liu and the Wu Han Peking Opera Company of China, one of the Top Ten Peking Opera Companies in the world, as well as the Qi Shu Fang Peking Opera Company for one performance only on Sunday, September 20, 2015 at 2:30 PMat NYU Skirball Center (566 LaGuardia Place at Washington Square South). This performance is part of the World Stage Series presented by NYU Skirball Center.

Wei Liu (Artistic Director of Wu Han Peking Opera Company of China) is an award-winning Peking Opera performing artist. She is a Level-One Performing Artist of China*, and is known for her performance as virtuous and elite female characters (Qingyi). In her thirty-plus-year performing experience, she has created many original roles that received endless raves. Ms. Liu is also the youngest performer to ever receive two Plum Performance Awards, the highest honor to receive in the Performing Arts in China. Under her leadership, Wu Han Peking Opera Company has been continuously selected as one of Top Ten Peking Opera Company in China for many years.

Synopsis - The program will highlight 3 New Pieces to the MoralesDance rep starting with “The Rest of Your Life”, a new creation by Tony Morales for 8 student dancers from Ballet Forte of New Jersey. This will be followed by Kate Skarpetowska's Brand new work titled “The Crossing” on 4 of the MoralesDance dancers and lastly, a little later in the program, “Idyll” will be premiered. A brand new work by Tony Morales featuring 4 of the dancers and the beautiful music of Leos Janacek. Other works include audience favorites like “Ablution” (the first piece ever created by Mr. Morales), “Piano Pieces” (created in 2000), last year's new creation (made on the ever wonderful Antonio Douthit-Boyd from the Ailey Co) “For You” and 'Circumstances' which will open the program. Guest Artist dancers include incredible up in coming talent such as Elaine Gutierrez, Molly Levy, Cassie Lewis, Martell Ruffin, Nadia Vostrikov and Jerome Melsaun Warren.

Tonight, June 5 and June 6, 12, & 13 at 7:30pm, Utopia Opera presents Richard Strauss' ground-breaking and thrilling Ariadne auf Naxos in a staged production performed with an 18-piece orchestra at the Ida K. Lang Recital Hall at Hunter College (695 Park Avenue). Utopia founder and artistic director,William Remmers, conducts while the acclaimed Benjamin Spierman (Indianapolis Opera, Dayton Opera, St. Petersburg Opera, Bronx Opera) directs; costume stylings are by Eric Lamp. 18-piece orchestral reduction by Christopher Fecteau.

Houston Ballet to Present Morris, Welch & Kylian, 5/28-6/7

From May 28 - June 7, 2015 Houston Ballet offers up a mixed repertory program titled Morris, Welch & Kylian featuring three of today's most dynamic and musical choreographers. A world premiere of The Letter V by acclaimed American choreographer Mark Morris, the world premiere of Stanton Welch's Zodiac and the revival of Ji?i Kylian's iconic Svadebka make this program a must-see for all ballet lovers. Zodiac is made possible through the generosity of Leticia Loya. BxO's Season 48 comes to a close with Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart's sequel to the Barber of Seville. The Marriage of Figaro follows the married and bored Count Almaviva, and his continued philandering. This time he has chosen his wife's maid to satiate his carnal desires. Only one thing stands in his way… her fiancée… FIGARO... no longer a barber, now the Count's right-hand man. Mozart's “folle journée” (crazy day) includes appearances by a slimy music master out for revenge, a scheming spinster, a drunken gardener, and numerous… and amorous… cohorts.

From September 4-14, 2014, Houston Ballet launches its 45th season with the company premiere of John Neumeier's three-act ballet A Midsummer Night's Dream. The ballet is based on Shakespeare's lighthearted play of the same name and follows the hijinks and hilarity that ensues when a well-intentioned plan with a love potion goes awry. Created in 1977, A Midsummer Night's Dream has served as Mr. Neumeier's calling card, being seen as one of his most joyous and popular creations. Houston Ballet is the first American ballet company to perform the famous work and it is the first piece by Mr. Neumeier to enter the Houston Ballet repertoire.

'Pagbabalik: Tracing the Path Home' by Kinding Sindaw (http://kindingsindaw.org), the New York-based southern Philippine performance troupe, entwines a contemporary story of the modern Philipines with a dramatic adaptation of the third chapter of the epic Derangen. The Derangen is a Mindanao epic shared by the Maranao, Maguindanao and Iranun tribes of the southern Philippines which celebrates episodes from regional history and stories of the tribulations of mythical heroes. This splendorous new work of dance theater is conceived and directed by Potri Ranka Manis, the daughter of a Sultan of the Maranao people of Mindanao, a true modern-day princess and tradition-bearer. La MaMa E.T.C. will present the piece today, April 24 to 27 in its Ellen Stewart Theatre, 66 East Fourth Street.
