Sharing sage wisdom from her life and career as well as reflecting on many of her most popular properties to date, Williams reveals some of her many secrets to success while also looking ahead to next month's hotly anticipated all-star concert presentation of legendary Jerome Kern and Oscar Hammerstein musical SHOW BOAT, co-starring Julian Ovenden, Norm Lewis, Jane Alexander and many more along with the New York Philharmonic under the direction of Ted Sperling. Also, Williams shares her enthusiasm for setting out to create new renditions of some of SHOW BOAT's most noted selections, including 'Can't Help Lovin' Dat Man Of Mine'. Raven Theatre's production of Dividing the Estate, by the Pulitzer Prize and two-time Academy award winning playwright Horton Foote, will feature a cast of 13 actors from many of Chicago's most celebrated theater companies, according to Michael Menendian, Raven's co-Artistic Director. Foote's comedy-drama, which focuses on the feuds and disputes among members of a wealthy Texas family whose fortunes have declined, was his last new play to be presented on Broadway. That 2008 production was nominated for Tony Awards for Best Original Play and Best Performance by a Featured Actress in a Play (Hallie Foote). Raven Theatre, who produced Foote's The Trip to Bountiful in 2013, will be the first company to bring this acclaimed script to a Chicago stage. Raven associate artistic director Cody Estle (Raven's Brighton Beach Memoirs and Vieux Carre, The Artistic Home's Watch on the Rhine, Mary-Arrchie's Uncle Bob) will direct. (more...)

Believing the best things in life are free - well, almost..., elderly Carrie Watts (Cicely Tyson), in her Tony-winning role, proves just how healing a return to one's roots, however brief, may be. This Broadway revival directed by Michael Wilson also stars Vanessa Williams from the original New York production and Blair Underwood replacing Cuba Gooding Jr. It's a stellar cast, achieving a truly beautiful representation of Foote's infreqeuntly seen work. With its thrilling, beautiful music and its mixture of high comedy and touching drama, the opera sweeps the viewer away into a world of young love, romance, and ultimately, bittersweet longing. Theater For The New City will present the world premiere of Christy-Smith Sloman's provocative new play Negative is Positive. This contemporary dramedy center's on a newly married interacial, upwardly mobile couple who's seemingly idyllic life is shattered by a shocking incident. Along with another couple, the unexpected incident forces them to explore issues of trust, failed expectations, jealousy, race and the true nature of their love. This production is also the New York stage debut of Sean Avery, former NHL star, New York Ranger and LGBT advocate. The cast also features Karen Eilbacher, Joshua Zirger, Vivienne Jurado and Fulton Hodges. Opening night is November 6th at 8pm. (more...)
