Karen Zacarias' new telenovela-inspired comedy Destiny of Desire receives its world premiere at Arena Stage at the Mead Center for American Theater, kicking off the company's 66th season with dramatic storytelling and comic flair. Zacarias, an inaugural resident playwright of the theater's American Voices New Play Institute whose previous credits include The Book Club Play and Legacy of Light, collaborates with renowned director Jose Luis Valenzuela, Artistic Director of the Latino Theater Company, to bring the Latin-American telenovela genre to life on stage. Destiny of Desire runs September 11-October 18, 2015 in the Kreeger Theater. (more...)

This partnership aims to celebrate LGBTQ youth and will feature actors Darren Criss and Rebecca Naomi Jones on the HMI parade float alongside HMI youth members who will walk during the parade. A group of 17 performers are busy rehearsing at the Los Angeles LGBT Center's Village at Ed Gould Plaza for a show about life in West Hollywood. They dance, they sing, they laugh and cry. Ranging in age from 55 - 87, this troupe, otherwise known as NewStAGES, is creating the story of Life in the First Gay City, performed June 28 at the Renberg Theatre, from their own experiences. A Letter to Harvey Milk, has a book by Jerry James, Cheryl Stern and Laura I. Kramer, lyrics by Ellen M. Schwartz with additional lyrics by Cheryl Stern, and music by Laura I. On June 15th and 16th,  The Other Mirror will present a staged reading of the new GODS & KINGS. A Theban king goes to pieces after snubbing the Greek god Dionysus and his pack of wild groupies in this alt-rock adaptation of Euripides's ripping tragedy, The Bacchae. It features music by Neil Douglas Reilly (Clinton the Musical, Little Dancer, Rocky), a book by Austin Ruffer, and lyrics by Maggie Herskowitz (The Edelweiss Pirates) and Austin Ruffer.   The reading is directed by Katherine M. Kathy Evans, Founding Executive Director of Rhinebeck Writers Retreat, announced the 17 writers and 8 new musicals selected for the fifth summer of weeklong retreats. For eight consecutive weeks beginning July 5th, each writing team will have a residency in Rhinebeck, New York. Writers are provided a private home, transportation, food, and a $400 stipend. This year's writers include Obie winner Kirsten Childs, Tony nominee Elizabeth Davis, and 2015 Jonathan Larson award-winners Charlie Sohne, Tim Rosser, and Sam Willmott, who also just won the Kleban Prize.  (more...)

Andrew Lippa along with Kate Baldwin and Conor Ryan, the stars of the recent acclaimed Keen Company production of John & Jen, the musical with music by Andrew Lippa, lyrics by Tom Greenwald, and a book by Greenwald and Lippa, will head over to 54 Below (254 West 54th Street) on Saturday June 6th, to celebrate the upcoming release of the 2015 Off-Broadway Cast Recording for Broadway Records.  A June 16th release is planned. Andrew Lippa and Michael Croiter produced the album. Musical Director is Lily Lang.  This recording will include the premiere of the new song, "Trouble with Men,' as well as new orchestrations and two songs from the score never before recorded.   (more...)
