BWW Review: ANNIE at Bass Performance HallBWW Review: ANNIE at Bass Performance Hall
by Kyle Christopher West - Jan 19, 2017

It's fitting that the weather on opening night of ANNIE as Bass Hall was gloomy and quite wet. Despite the redundant anthem boasting 'the sun'll come out tomorrow,' the quality of the current tour didn't seem so bright. With generally unremarkable performances across the board, any themes of hope or optimism felt anything but inspiring. (more...)

BWW Review: It's Gonna Be Gone TOMORROW! ANNIE Brings Much Appreciated Optimism in Brief Stop at The McCallumBWW Review: It's Gonna Be Gone TOMORROW! ANNIE Brings Much Appreciated Optimism in Brief Stop at The McCallum
by David Green - Jan 11, 2017

Some people roll their eyes when you mention the musical ANNIE. But, I tell you what. ANNIE never disappoints. It is not Sondheim. It is not Hamilton. It is not Pasek and Paul. But -the book is strong - the laughs are genuine and plenty. The lyrics are clever and the melodies as singable as they come. This production of ANNIE is far from perfect - but it is still a pretty perfect little musical! It is a "leave your troubles at the door" evening in the theatre and an optimistic antidote to any depression you might be feeling in this rather volatile political climate. There are just two performances remaining in the Coachella Valley, but it would be worth your time to drop whatever you're doing and snatch up the limited remaining tickets.  (more...)

BWW Review: Endearing ANNIE Graces the Memphis OrpheumBWW Review: Endearing ANNIE Graces the Memphis Orpheum
by Caroline Sposto - Dec 15, 2016

It's the time of year to reflect on the past and enjoy familiar stories that warm our hearts. In otherwords, 'tis the season for ANNIE. That spunky waif has been part of our American culture for more than 130 years. She was first penned into existence by poet James Whitcomb Riley in 1885. His poem, 'Little Orphant Annie',was inspired by Mary Alice 'Allie' Smith, an orphaned child who came to live in the Riley home. (more...)
