Bristol Riverside Theatre concludes its 2013-2014 season with the popular cult classic Little Shop of Horrors by Alan Menken and Howard Ashman on May 6-June 8. Directed by Susan D. Atkinson, the ensemble cast features Berlando Drake, Carl Clemons-Hopkins, Laura C. Giknis, Nate Golden, Daniel Marcus, Andrew McMath, Candace Thomas, Danny Vaccaro, and Lindsey Warren. (more...)

Rehearsals began this week for Titan Theatre Company's final production of its critically acclaimed second season, Shakespeare's masterpiece, KING LEAR. The epic story of the 'Mad King' and his three daughters will run April 25 - May 11, 2014 at Queens Theatre, the borough's premiere performing arts venue. Titan Theatre Company Artistic Director Lenny Banovez, who previously helmed Titan's hit productions of A Midsummer Night's Dream, Romeo and Juliet and Henry V, will direct. Steep Theatre's upcoming Midwest Premiere of Nick Payne's If There Is I Haven't Found It Yet will feature an exceptionally talented group of Chicago artists, including two Steep Company Members (Peter Moore and Cynthia Marker), a Columbia College student (Caitlin Looney), and an actor most recently seen on stage at the Goodman (Shane Kenyon). If There Is I Haven't Found It Yet opens at Steep Theatre on Friday, April 18, and will be directed by Steep Artistic Associate Jonathan Berry. (more...)

The House Theatre of Chicago Presents DORIAN, Now thru 5/18

The House Theatre of Chicago presents DORIAN, a modern adaptation of Oscar Wilde's novel 'The Picture of Dorian Gray.' This famous thriller of Dorian's ill-fated portrait is performed in promenade style. This original play is intended for mature audiences only, and is written by Company Members Ben Lobpries and Tommy Rapley. Company Member Kevin O'Donnell provides the score. Rapley directs and choreographs. The production previews today, April 4 - 13 and opens on Monday April 14 at 7pm at the Chopin Theatre (1543 W. Division St, Chicago). Alley Theatre Artistic Director Gregory Boyd announces the cast and creative team for Alan Ayckbourn's science fiction comedy Communicating Doors. Eleven plays penned by Alan Ayckbourn have been produced by the Alley, including the American premiere of Henceforward, directed by Ayckbourn, in 1987 and House & Garden in 2002. Alan Ayckbourn has been inducted into the American Theatre's Hall of Fame, received the 2010 Critics' Circle Award for Services to the Arts, became the first British playwright to receive both Olivier and Tony Special Lifetime Achievement Awards and was knighted in 1997 for services to the theatre. Aurora Theatre continues the 2013-2014 Harvel Lab Series with a Teatro del Sol production, Mariela in the Desert by Karen Zacarias. It is 1950 and artists Mariela and Jose are living an isolated existence in the desert of Northern Mexico, haunted by the ghost of their young son. Jose is very ill and Mariela sends a telegram to their daughter encouraging her to come home. Where once the walls were beautifully decorated, now only one painting remains, and it is shrouded in mystery. This play will be performed in Spanish with English supertitles. This production features an amazing cast including the stunning Blanca Aguero in the title role of Mariela and Aurora Theatre Producing Artistic Director Anthony P. Artemisia's workshop/staged reading of Chewing On Beckett will perform May 8, 9 and 10, 2014, and is a wild, female riff on Waiting For Godot. Inspired by the discovery that the Beckett Estate prohibits women from performing Beckett's masterpiece, Chewing On Beckett takes a personal, tragic and hilarious look at the close bond between two women, who find themselves abandoned in a futuristic wasteland. Producing Artistic Director Gwendolyn Whiteside and American Blues Theater, Chicago's second oldest Equity ensemble, are proud to announce the Chicago premiere of Grounded, by George Brant and directed by Lisa Portes, June 6 - July 13 at the Greenhouse Theater Center, 2257 N. Lincoln Ave. The running time is approximately 80 minutes. Yale Institute for Music Theatre to Develop AFTERLAND and CLOUDS ARE PILLOWS FOR THE MOON

The YALE INSTITUTE FOR MUSIC THEATRE has selected two original book musicals to be developed in an intensive lab setting in New Haven, June 3-15. Afterland, with music and lyrics by Benjamin Velez and book and lyrics by Kathryn Hathaway, will be directed by Mark Brokaw; and Clouds are Pillows for the Moon, with music by Tidtaya Sinutoke and book and lyrics by Ty Defoe, will be directed by Leigh Silverman. The Institute culminates with open rehearsal readings of each project, presented as a part of the International Festival of Arts & Ideas, on June 14 and 15. (more...)

Steep Theatre Welcomes Nick Horst to Ensemble

Steep Theatre Company has announced that actor and long-time collaborator Nick Horst has joined their ensemble. Nick first worked with Steep in 2010 on their production of Mark Schultz's A Brief History of Helen of Troy, and later appeared in their 2011 production of David Mamet's Lakeboat and 2013's Fallow, by Kenneth Lin. He most recently appeared on stage in the Goodman Theatre's production of Solid Sand Below, directed by now fellow Steep associate Jonathan Berry. Nick is the first addition to the company's acting ensemble since Kendra Thulin joined the company in 2011. (more...)
