Ensemble of the Romantic Century Presents TCHAIKOVSKY: NONE BUT THE LONELY HEART, Now thru 3/9

Celebrating its 13th season, the Ensemble of the Romantic Century (ERC) presents Tchaikovsky: None But the Lonely Heart at The Fishman Space in the new BAM Fisher. A fully staged theatrical concert blending striking music, powerful language and biography, Tchaikovsky: None But the Lonely Heart delves into the unconventional 16-year long relationship between one of the great composers of the 19th century and his patroness, Madame von Meck. Written by Eve Wolf and directed by Donald T. Sanders, this evening-length production seamlessly interweaves a dramatic script performed by actor Simon Fortin (Tchaikovsky) and actress Ariel Bock (Madame von Meck) of Shakespeare & Company with live chamber and vocal music performed by violinist Rachel Lee Priday, cellist Adrian Daurov, pianist Eve Wolf and tenor Blake Friedman. Featuring some of Tchaikovsky's epic pieces including Piano Trio in A Minor, Tchaikovsky: None But the Lonely Heart represents some of the composer's balletic works through dance both choreographed and performed by American Ballet Theatre dancer Daniel Mantei. Ballet San Jose Presents Karen Gabay's THE NUTCRACKER, 12/13-12/26

Ballet San Jose will present choreographer Karen Gabay's staging of the holiday classic The Nutcracker--which received its acclaimed premiere last season—in 11 performances December 13 through 26 at the San Jose Center for the Performing Arts. The production features nearly 100 performers, live music with Ballet San Jose Music Director George Daugherty conducting Symphony Silicon Valley, sets by Paul Kelly and costumes by Broadway legend Theoni V. Aldredge. Gabay's staging takes much of its inspiration from the traditional E.T.A. Hoffmann story, The Nutcracker and the Mouse King, but features subtle but decidedly feminist underpinnings and brims with bravura dancing and seasonal charm. Performances will be given Friday, December 13, at 7 pm; Saturday, December 14, at 1:30 and *7 pm; Sunday, December 15, at *1:30 pm; Friday, December 20, at *7 pm, Saturday, December 21, at 1:30 and 7 pm; Sunday, December 22, at 1:30 pm; Monday, December 23, at 1:30 pm; Tuesday, December 24, at *1:30 pm; and Thursday, December 26, 1:30 pm (*special Family-Priced tickets available.) The National Symphony Orchestra Announces its 2013 Wolf Trap Summer Schedule

The National Symphony Orchestra today announced its 2013 line-up of performances at Wolf Trap National Park for the Performing Arts. Eleven performances will take place between June 26 and August 3, 2013. Emil de Cou, in his ninth season as NSO@Wolf Trap Festival Conductor, hosts 10 of the performances and conducts four, including the opening and closing performances in the series. (more...)
