BWW Reviews: Jane Monheit Presents Stunning Tribute to Judy GarlandBWW Reviews: Jane Monheit Presents Stunning Tribute to Judy Garland
by Michael L. Quintos - Mar 16, 2015

Any opportunity to catch two-time Grammy-nominated international jazz superstar and frequent favorite BroadwayWorld Cabaret Award-winner Jane Monheit bring her talents to a local venue outside of New York (and even nearby Los Angeles) is its own cause for celebration. That was certainly evidenced by the rapturous reception she received during her triumphant return to Orange County's Segerstrom Center for the Arts. Monheit closed out the Center's 2014-2015 Jazz series with Hello Bluebird, her jazz-centric tribute to the legendary Judy Garland. As expected, the 85-minute concert was nothing less than stunning. Let me repeat... stunning. (more...)

STAGE TUBE: On This Day for 3/13/15- BRIGADOONSTAGE TUBE: On This Day for 3/13/15- BRIGADOON
by Stage Tube - Mar 13, 2015

Today in 1947, Brigadoon opened at the Ziegfeld Theatre, where it ran for 581 performances. Brigadoon is a musical with a book and lyrics by Alan Jay Lerner and music by Frederick Loewe. It tells the story of a mysterious Scottish village that appears for only one day every hundred years, though to the villagers, the passing of each century seems no longer than one night. Brigadoon then received a West End production opening in 1949 that ran for 685 performances, and many revivals followed. A 1954 film version starred Gene Kelly and Cyd Charisse. A 1966 television version starred Robert Goulet and Peter Falk. (more...)

BWW Reviews: MARK NADLER's 'Addicted To The Spotlight' at 54 Below Showcases Abundant Talent, Cleverly FramedBWW Reviews: MARK NADLER's 'Addicted To The Spotlight' at 54 Below Showcases Abundant Talent, Cleverly Framed
by Alix Cohen - Feb 19, 2015

When Mark Nadler, singing the iconic Irving Berlin song and Al Jolson standard 'Let Me Sing and I'm Happy,' strolls from the back of 54 Below to his rightful place center stage (accompanied by Nick Russo on banjo), he seems, in all respects, a jaunty, debonair thespian. The song is light, unembellished, infectious. What you're watching in truth is a state of the art ballistic missile unerringly headed for its target. 'My name is Mark and I'm a spotlightaholic.' Tonight Nadler celebrates two 'out of control' spotlightaholics--Danny Kaye and Al Jolson--both of whom put themselves (and kept themselves) in front of audiences every available moment. (The artist designates himself as a 'functional' sufferer of the compulsion.) Memorable anecdotes enlighten and entertain. 'In the spirit of Kaye and Jolson, however, this show is all about ME.' Four decades in, Nadler calls show business his religion. Judging by ensuing narrative, his zealous devotion is, in context, worthy of sainthood. (more...)

by Jennifer Vazquez - Feb 3, 2015

Just as there are few movies that become classics, there are even fewer that produce a song, much less a complete soundtrack, that has become so engrained in pop culture. With this in mind, it comes as no surprise that 'Singin' in the Rain' was chosen as the next movie to be showcased as part of New Jersey Symphony Orchestra's (NJSO) POPS Series. (more...)

BWW Review: NEWSIES Brings Charm, Remarkable Talent to Dr. Phillips CenterBWW Review: NEWSIES Brings Charm, Remarkable Talent to Dr. Phillips Center
by Matt Tamanini - Jan 29, 2015

Admittedly, I am not in the target demographic for Disney's musical NEWSIES, running through February 1st at Orlando's Dr. Phillips Center for the Performing Arts. This musical, which concluded its two-and-a-half year Broadway run last fall, has inspired a legion of young, female fans who have dubbed themselves 'Fansies.' So while I might not be who the show is normally marketed towards, I left the Walt Disney Theatre on Opening Night completely infected by the optimism, athleticism, and heart of this movie-musical adaptation. Though far from being without fault, the score (which won a Tony for composer Alan Menken and lyricist Jack Feldman), the script (by Tony-winner Harvey Fierstein), and the immense talent of the young ensemble made this a exceptionally enjoyable evening of entertainment.
