BWW Reviews: SPRING AWAKENING Examines the Hard Stuff at Centaur TheatreBWW Reviews: SPRING AWAKENING Examines the Hard Stuff at Centaur Theatre
by Meghan Pearson - Oct 7, 2014

As part of Centaur's Theatres Brave New Looks series, Persephone Productions certainly does take a hard look at adolescent turmoil in their remount of Spring Awakening. They unmistakably prove that repression of youth is a timeless and borderless reality that is often exasperated by adults' indifference and intolerance towards young people. (more...)

Duncan's Sheik's indie rock musical, Spring Awakening, is a coming of age story based on the controversial German play Spring Awakening (1891) by Frank Wedekind. The play was banned in Germany for some time due to its frank portrayal of abortion, homosexuality, rape, child abuse and suicide. The musical, first produced in 2006, tells the story of teenagers discovering the intricacies - good and bad - of their own sexuality. (more...)

by Wendi Reichstein - Sep 19, 2014

"I really, really miss high school theatre." This was the first thought I had as I entered, sat and watched, and exited McCallum Fine Arts Academy' production of The Producers. Because I first-handedly know how much work- and how much fun- it is to spend countless hours rehearsing (need to interject that these dedicated students spent their summer rehearsing for this show), running the show countless times, and making several costume and set changes, showstopping numbers, and putting on a beloved Broadway musical on their high school stage look easy. And MacTheatre pulled it off. (more...)

by Nyderah Williams - Sep 16, 2014

Following a group of kids growing up in a pious community in late-19th-century Germany, SPRING AWAKENING explores the lust and confusion of the adolescents discovering their budding sexuality while being repressed by their parents and teachers. Wendla's mother is too inhibited to give her daughter an ounce of sex education. Moritz (Miguel Guzman) believes the erotic dreams that plague him are a sure sign of insanity. Melchior (Colton Wright), having learned about sex through books, tries to inform his friends about what they feel and is convinced that the suppression of desire is a conspiracy among the adults to keep the teens unhappy and complacent.
