What a year for theatre 2019 has been! Remembering all of the amazing shows as part of the build-up to the BroadwayWorld UK Awards has been a complete joy, and it is my pleasure to present some thoughts about the shows that have left a distinct impression on my stagey mind.

Baltimore Shakespeare Factory (BSF) will close their 2019 season with the Baltimore premiere of the 1607 parody play, The Knight of the Burning Pestle. This rarely performer sendup of courtly romance was penned by Francis Beaumont, a contemporary of William Shakespeare.

In 1607 Francis Beaumont was about to premiere his new play The Knight of the Burning Pestle, the pastiche that was set to change British comedy forever. It sees a bunch of audience members taking charge and invading the stage, dissatisfied with how the show they're watching is developing. Cheek By Jowl's current touring collaboration with Moscow Pushkin Drama Theatre is a revisited version of the piece.

The play seems to be a retrospective of Shakespeare's career, with a strong note of self-parody. And with a playwright as fecund as Shakespeare, a 'greatest hits album' would have to be full to bursting. And so that's what Cymbeline is: a 'greatest hits' that refuses to take itself seriously, and invites us to participate in Shakespeare's gentle laugh at himself.

Independent Shakespeare Co. (ISC), presenters of the Griffith Park Free Shakespeare Festival and recipients of the 2018 Paul Robeson Award by Actors' Equity Foundation and Actors' Equity Association, announce the annual festival celebrating theater, iambic lab, beginning Saturday, February 2 and running through Sunday, February 17 at the ISC Studio in the Atwater Crossing Arts + Innovation Complex, 3191 Casitas Ave., #130 in Atwater Village.

Baltimore Shakespeare Factory is pleased to announce a 2019 season that offers the full breadth of the early-modern-theater experience. Beginning with the BSF premiere of one of Shakespeare's late-period masterpieces (Cymbeline), continuing with two of his most beloved works (Hamlet, Romeo and Juliet), and followed by his hilarious send-off to one of his finest creations: the ultimate rapscallion, Falstaff (The Merry Wives of Windsor); BSF closes their season with an absurd, bawdy, meta-theatrical triumph by Francis Beaumont (The Knight of the Burning Pestle).

The Barbican today announces its full January to June 2019 Theatre and Dance programme. Tickets for the season go on sale to Barbican Members Plus on Wednesday 17 October, to Barbican Members on Friday 19 October and on general sale on Friday 26 October 2018.

Pocket Universe, producer of last summer's acclaimed Julius Caesar set in an all-girls high school, has announced a new production of Francis Beaumont & John Fletcher's THE MAID'S TRAGEDY, set in present-day Hollywood. Conceived by Alyssa May Gold (Julius Caesar, Brilliant Traces) and directed by Lucy Gram, it will play from June 13-30, 2018 at the Access Theater (380 Broadway) in TriBeCa.  Tickets are on-sale now here.

A theatre company begins their newest play, about a merchant's apprentice who falls in love with the merchant's beautiful daughter - when suddenly a couple in the audience interrupt to complain about plays making fun of honest London middle-class citizens, and demand a good old-fashioned adventure story, with knights, princesses, and giants.

In keeping with Brave Spirits Theatre's commitment to producing overlooked works from Shakespeare's contemporaries, the company's staging of Francis Beaumont and John Fletcher's A KING AND NO KING marks a DC metro area professional premiere. An excellent cast and a modern approach by director Cassie Ash and the creative team make this production worthwhile.

Bad Quarto Productions, a theatre company specializing in performing modern theatre using Shakespearean staging techniques, has announced the company for its upcoming production of Cupid's Revenge, an early 1600s play by Shakespeare's contemporaries John Fletcher and Francis Beaumont. 

Theatre for the Game of Thrones fan: In two plays from Shakespeare's contemporaries, brothers and sisters defy the greatest taboo and fall in love. Incestuous passion threatens to overcome reason, but to very different results. Brave Spirits Theatre pairs John Ford's gruesome tragedy,'Tis Pity She's a Whore, with Francis Beaumont and John Fletcher's rarely produced tragicomedy, A King and No King.

Bad Quarto Productions, a theatre company specializing in performing modern theatre using Shakespearean staging techniques, will stage Cupid's Revenge, a play by successor-playwrights to William Shakespeare shortly after his retirement. Written by famous collaborators Francis Beaumont and John Fletcher, and first printed in 1615, Cupid's Revenge is a tale of love, revenge, and mortal folly that was highly influential to post-Shakespearean playwrights.
