This winter The 5th Avenue Theatre will warm hearts with the West Coast premiere of the Broadway smash hit Irving Berlin's Holiday Inn. Just announced, the cast will ffeature the talents of Seattle stars and 5th Avenue favorites Eric Ankrim (How to Succeed..., First Date, Paint Your Wagon) as Jim Hardy, Sarah Rose Davis (The Pajama Game, How to Succeed...) as Linda Mason, Matt Owen (ELF, Spamalot, A Room with a View) as Ted Hanover and Taryn Darr (The Pajama Game, A Chorus Line) as Lila Dixon. This winter The 5th Avenue Theatre will warm hearts with the West Coast premiere of the Broadway smash hit Irving Berlin's Holiday Inn.

ArtsWest is pleased to announce the 2017 Cabaret series, AFTER HOURS WITH MATHEW WRIGHT: SUMMER OF SONDHEIM, featuring Eric Ankrim on July 17, Jessica Skerritt on July 24, and Justin Huertas with special guest Rheanna Atendido on July 31.  

In response to strong ticket sales and critical acclaim, ArtsWest will extend the run of Stephen Sondheim's Sweeney Todd through Friday, July 7, 2017. The additional performances are scheduled for 7:30pm each evening, with the exception of the 3pm matinee on Sunday, July 2. Tickets for the added performances can be purchased immediately at arstwest.org.  

The Sondheim classic "Sweeney Todd, The Demon Barber of Fleet Street" is one of those shows that everyone wants to put their own stamp on. It's an incredibly rich show and quite difficult to perform requiring a killer cast (pun intended). There have been concerts, productions where the actors play the instruments, and now an Off-Broadway production where they actually serve the audience hot pies. And locally it's been done to excess. Now ArtsWest has thrown their razors into the ring with their own particular take on this anti-hero by offering it up with a diverse cast and in a somewhat timeless era London. And while there are some decent voices up there, overall the cast lacks character intent and the diversity and time shift lend nothing to the story and at times muddy it.

Joining Broadway star Cortney Wolfson and Disney star Stephanie Renee Wall onstage this summer in the world premiere production of Romy and Michele's High School Reunion at The 5th Avenue Theatre is a sensational cast that's the coolest thing since the invention of Post-its!

It's been a crazy year, Dear Readers. Lots of ups, lots of downs, and LOTS of emotions. And I'm not just talking about on stage. But let's not dwell on the bad things that may have happened in the world and focus on some of the amazing things Seattle theater companies gave us this past year, and let me tell you there were quite a few. So many in fact that in some categories I simply had to call out more than the usual Honorable Mentions as some performances just needed to be noted. You'll see what I mean especially when you get to the female categories as the ladies were certainly bringing it this year. But let's get started shall we? Out of the myriad shows I saw this year in Seattle, here are the shows and performances that truly stood out to me.
