From the Saharan capital of Nouakchott, Mauritania, Noura Mint Seymali embarks on a debut tour of the United States in September 2013, transporting sounds from the desert tents and urban courtyards where Moorish music lives to the American concert hall. Noura Mint Seymali, lead vocalist, and her husband Jeiche Ould Chighaly, guitarist, hail from two of Mauritania's most prominent Moorish griot families, the storied class of musician-historians in West Africa. Located at the convergence of North and Sub-Saharan Africa, Mauritania bridges the cultural divide between the Arab world and Francophone West Africa, a convergence revealed most tellingly in the music of the griot. ?Four concerts from October to November will showcase the work of artists hailing from the United States, Germany and Japan, including: improvisational German trumpeter Birgit Ulher with Eric Leonardson (Oct. 8 at 8 p.m.); electro-acoustic chamber music outfit Gene Coleman and Ensemble N_JP (Oct. 23 at 8 p.m.); Chicago-based flutist Lisa Goethe-McGinn (Nov. 10 at 2 p.m.); and Japenese shamisen performers Yoko Reikano Kimura and Yumiko Tanaka (Nov. 13 at 8 p.m.). The musicians' work oscillates between the traditional and the contemporary, probing noise and silence equally, shifting between reactive improvisation and studied composition. (more...)

Roulette presents the 17-piece The Bill Horvitz Expanded Band performing music from the new CD, The Long Walk, a suite of pieces composed as a tribute to Bill's brother Philip Horvitz, who passed away of heart failure in 2005 at the age of 44.
