Music Director Alan Gilbert will lead the New York Philharmonic in the World Premiere of HK Gruber's Piano Concerto - a Philharmonic co-commission with the Berlin Philharmonic, Royal Concertgebouw, and Royal Stockholm Philharmonic orchestras - with pianist Emanuel Ax as soloist; Weill's Little Threepenny Music for Wind Orchestra; and Schubert's Symphony No. 2. The performances will take place Thursday, January 5, 2017, at 7:30 p.m.; Friday, January 6 at 8:00 p.m.; and Saturday, January 7 at 8:00 p.m. (more...)

Hennepin Theatre Trust announced today that ZAKIR HUSSAIN, one of the world's greatest percussionists, the wizardly Indian tabla player and composer, returns to Minneapolis to perform at the historic Pantages Theatre (710 Hennepin Ave., Minneapolis) on Friday, April 28, 2017 at 8 p.m. Zakir will be joined on stage by Indian classical, fusion and experimental performer RAHUL SHARMA. Sharma has written music for several Bollywood films. In 2002, he was one of the youngest music directors for whom the nightingale of Inida Lata mangeshkar sang all the songs for Yash chopra's 'Mujhase Dosti karoge' starring Hritik Roshan-Kareena Kapoor. The first prize of the 31st Annual Irving M. Klein International String Competition, carrying a purse of $13,000, has been awarded to 19-year-old bassist  William Langlie-Miletich, the first-ever bassist to be awarded the top prize. The Competition Finals were held the evening of Friday, June 3 at the San Francisco Conservatory of Music and included four competitors advancing from the Semifinals the previous day, an original group of nine. Langlie-Miletich's winning program for the final round included select movements of J.S. Bach's Suite No. 1 in G Major, BWV 1007, Johannes Brahms' Sonata No. 1, Op. 38, and Giovanni Bottesini's Double Bass Concerto No. 2 in B Minor. The second prize goes to cellist Coleman Itzkoff, third prize goes to violinist Alina Kobialka, and fourth prize goes to violinist Evin Blomberg. (more...)
