Suffused with grief and unrequited love, Twelfth Night is often played as an anti-comedy - more melancholy than mirthful. Not so in Simon Godwin's brash, gender-bending, utterly joyful rendering, which takes loss as a cue to embrace life.

Obsession, an adaptation of the Luchino Visconti film starring Oscar nominee Jude Law and directed by Tony and Olivier award winner Ivo van Hove, is the latest National Theatre Live screening to be announced and will be broadcast to cinemas from the Barbican Theatre in London on Thursday, May 11, 2017.

World premieres, new writers and ground-breaking adaptations have been announced for 2017 at the National Theatre.

New work by Inua Ellams, Ya?l Farber, DC Moore, Lindsey Ferrentino and Nina Raine is announced today by Rufus Norris, Director of the National Theatre. Four world premieres and two European premieres are further announced as forthcoming productions for the National Theatre in 2017.

Following Posh and prior to Constellations, The Royal Court Theatre Productions and Ambassador Theatre Group present JUMPY by April De Angelis. Nina Raine directs this frank and funny family drama. Tamsin Greig returns to star as Hilary, the part for which she won universal acclaim at the Royal Court. Doon Mackichan also returns to play her best friend, Frances. After announcing this morning that he will return to the Royal Shakespeare Company this summer, Patrick Stewart has also announced that he will be returning to the Young Vic next year. He will appear as William Shakespeare in Edward Bond's 1973 play Bingo, a play he first appeared in back in April 2010 at Chichester Festival's Minerva theatre.

The cast has been announced for April de Angelis's new play Jumpy at the Royal Court Theatre from 13 October (press night 19 October). Tamsin Greig, playing Hilary, is joined by Doon Mackichan as her best friend Francis.
