The Los Angeles Philharmonic and its Music Director Gustavo Dudamel opened the 2014/15 season with A Celebration of John Williams: Opening Night Gala Concert, a star-studded evening honoring the greatest film composer of all time at Walt Disney Concert Hall, Tuesday, September 30. The event featured the LA Phil, led by Dudamel, world-renowned violinist Itzhak Perlman, soloists Dan Higgins, Glenn Paulson and Michael Valerio, the U.S. Army Herald Trumpets and the Los Angeles Children's Chorus, led by Anne Tomlinson and supported by members from the Angeles Chorale. Also showcased were several elaborate video installations created by projection designer Netia Jones and critically-acclaimed creative studio LIGHTMAP. The all-Williams concert program included specially selected works from throughout his impressive career as well as a surprise appearance during the encores. (more...)

The Los Angeles Philharmonic Association will present the 36th annual Playboy Jazz Festival June 14-15, 2014, at the Hollywood Bowl. As always, the Festival will feature the emerging generation of jazz artists as well as superstars of the genre. George Lopez will host the event, marking the second year of his involvement with the Festival after taking over from Bill Cosby in 2013. (more...)

Los Angeles Philharmonic Association President and Chief Executive Officer Deborah Borda has announced the appointment of Kathleen Kane to the position of Vice President of Philanthropy. The Handel and Haydn Society (H+H) and Artistic Director Harry Christophers have announced H+H's 2014-2015 Season-its 200th-featuring the Period Instrument Orchestra and Chorus performing works from the Baroque and Classical eras. Highlights include a collection of some of the greatest oratorios ever written, stellar guest artists, and two brilliant showcases for H+H Concertmaster Aisslinn Nosky. The Los Angeles Philharmonic joins forces with the Simon Bolivar Symphony Orchestra of Venezuela in TchaikovskyFest - an exploration of Tchaikovsky, led by Gustavo Dudamel, including performances of the six symphonies and selected tone poems; and significant community and education events with Youth Orchestra LA (YOLA), including the TAKE A STAND symposium, which will examine best practices, lessons learned and future directions of music education. Evident during the monumental Mahler Project, presented during the 2011/12 season, the relationship between the LA Phil and the Simon Bolivar Symphony Orchestra of Venezuela is a partnership that transcends limitation and truly epitomizes unity through music. Today, the Los Angeles Philharmonic received ASCAP's first place award for programming of contemporary music as part of the 2012-2013 ASCAP Awards for Adventurous Programming. The award - the Orchestra's 29th since the ASCAP Awards were inaugurated - will be presented at the League of American Orchestra's 68th Annual Conference in St. Louis, MO. The LA Phil is one of 19 orchestras to be honored with a 2012-2013 ASCAP Award. The League and ASCAP present the awards each year to orchestras of all sizes for programs that challenge the audience, build the repertoire, and increase interest in music of our time. Approximately $725,000 has been bestowed on orchestras since the awards wereestablished in 1947. (more...)

Following Gustavo Dudamel and the Los Angeles Philharmonic's successful world premiere of LA Phil Creative Chair John Adams' The Gospel According to the Other Mary last season, they present the oratorio in a theatrical setting at Walt Disney Concert Hall, Thursday and Friday, March 7 and 8, at 7:30 pm, and Sunday, March 10, at 2 pm. Once again the Los Angeles Master Chorale and six soloists: mezzo-soprano Kelley O'Connor, contralto Tamara Mumford, tenor Russell Thomas and countertenors Daniel Bubeck, Brian Cummings and Nathan Medley, return for Adams' large-scale LA Phil-commissioned work. The production also features dancers Michael Schumacher, Anani Sanouvi and Troy Ogilvie. Iconoclastic director Peter Sellars oversees the world premiere staging of the work. The project will then be taken on tour with its European premiere during the orchestra's international residency at the Barbican London, and continuing performances in Lucerne and Paris, followed by the East Coast premiere at Avery Fisher Hall in New York.
