South African Isango Ensemble Headed to Shakespeare Theatre Company this Fall

The Shakespeare Theatre Company brings two productions by the Isango Ensemble to Washington, D.C., as part of STC's 2014-2015 Presentation Series. The Isango Ensemble's unique performances reset Western theatre classics within a South African township, utilizing music, dance and elements of South African heritage. The Ensemble will perform an adaption of Mozart's opera The Magic Flute- Impempe Yomlingo and Shakespeare's epic love poem Venus and Adonis in repertory at the Lansburgh Theatre September 12-21, 2014. Tickets for non-subscribers will be available starting August 1, when individual tickets for the 2014-2015 STC Season go on sale. (more...)

Gulfshore Playhouse to Continue Book Club in 2014-15 Season

As a part of their Synergy Series, The Gulfshore Playhouse Book Club will continue in the 2014-2015 Season. The Book Club will focus on titles that relate to the themes being shown on the Gulfshore Playhouse stage throughout the season. From October 2014 to April 2015, he Gulfshore Playhouse will focus on 6 books, with one meeting to discuss each book. The genre of books will vary based on the play that is concurrently in production, and may include fiction, non-fiction, plays, and educational titles. (more...)

This play examines the roles of dominance in life. Thomas, a beleaguered playwright/director, is desperate to find an actress to play Vanda, the female lead in his adaptation of the classic sadomasochistic tale Venus in Fur. Into his empty audition room walks a vulgar and equally desperate actress-oddly enough, named Vanda. When Vanda arrives several hours late to her audition for a play based on a nineteenth-century erotic novel, the director, Thomas, is less than impressed. (more...)

2011 Tony nominee for Best Play VENUS IN FUR, written by David Ives, inspired by Austrian writer Leopold von Sacher-Masoch's 1870 novella 'Venus in Furs,' made its Asian premiere in Singapore last year. Andrew Botsford of Quogue, visiting professor and communications consultant for the graduate arts program at Stony Brook Southampton and co-host of the annual Hamptons Take 2 Documentary Film Festival, will introduce our summer films each Tuesday night and discuss the films afterwards with guest commentators, followed by an informal audience discussion. An actor with the Hampton Theatre Company in Quogue since 1985, Andrew has written extensively about film and theater and was for 20 years the associate editor of The Southampton Press and editor of its Arts & Living section. This saucy update of Moliere's The Misanthrope by Tony Award-nominated David Ives (Venus in Fur) stuffs contemporary off-color slang into the classic baroque farce, in which rivals scheme romance to expose a notorious cynic. A few cunning lies set party girl Celimene and acerbic wit Frank up for battle and sex. Misbehavior, gossip, glamour and scandal reign in this clowning burlesque written in rhymed couplets.
