Los Angeles Chamber Orchestra (LACO), led by Music Director Jeffrey Kahane, presents Prokofiev's virtuosic Violin Concerto No. 2, featuring special guest violinist Joseph Swensen, and Mozart's resplendent Flute Concerto No. 1, highlighting LACO Principal Flute David Shostac, on Saturday, March 14, 2015, 8 pm, at Glendale's Alex Theatre, and Sunday, March 15, 2015, 7 pm, at UCLA's Royce Hall. Kahane also conducts Haydn's Symphony No. 64 in A major, 'Times Change,' and LACO Composer-in-Residence Andrew Norman's Gran Turismo for eight solo violins, which the composer describes as a 'creative joyride' named for 'an addictive car racing video game.' New York is the home of some of the most renowned and exemplary dance companies in the world, such as New York City Ballet and American Ballet Theater. It is quite easy for New York balletomanes to fall into the habit of seeing the same iconic and large-scale works year after year. While there is nothing wrong with seeing particular dancers perform well-known works with their respective companies repeatedly, it is quite refreshing to see some of these New York based dancers perform new works on a much smaller scale. The Oscar-winning and Tony-nominated actress Estelle Parsons was honored at La Mama's annual benefit fundraiser, along with longtime La MaMa board member Peter Swords on last night, February 27, 2013 at the Ellen Stewart Theatre (66 E. 4 St.). Ms. Parsons, who appeared last fall at La MaMa in Marco Calvani's play THINGS OF THIS WORLD directed by Neil LaBute, and Mr. Swords, who served as a member of the La MaMa Board for 25 years, wascelebrated at the event by personal and video tributes from playwrights Warren Leight and Mr. LaBute.
