by BWW News Desk - Sep 30, 2016

From 1964 to 1967, the extraordinary Nina Simone released seven albums on PhilipsRecords, further establishing her peerless artistic expression and singular voice. During this exceptional purple patch, she recorded some of her best and most important work of her career, much of it fuelled by the Civil Rights Movement and the turmoil of 1960s America. In conjunction with their 60(th) anniversary this year, Verve is celebrating the genius of Simone, the supernaturally gifted singer, pianist and prolific songwriter, and her incredible mid-'60s run with the release of her entire Philips catalog on vinyl. Billy Bob Thornton & The Boxmasters Coming to FolsomBilly Bob Thornton & The Boxmasters Coming to Folsom
by BWW News Desk - Aug 22, 2016

Billy Bob Thornton - yes, that Billy Bob Thornton - performs on Stage One of the Harris Center with his American country rock/rockabilly band The Boxmasters, a group of seasoned musicians whose music is rich in rhythm and story. They're the real deal: their third album Modbilly reached #1 on the Americana Radio Chart and #14 on the Americana Music Association's Top 100 Albums of the Year, and they've toured as Willie Nelson's opening act. "They're working in the tradition of musical mavericks Waylon Jennings, Kris Kristofferson and Johnny Cash, surveying the world for stories of ordinary people" (Los Angeles Times). Onstage, "the group shifts seamlessly between Nuggets-type garage rock and country-inflected ballads, with Thornton prefacing the songs with alternatingly poignant and outrageous stories" (Rolling Stone). BWW Review: BUDDY - THE BUDDY HOLLY STORY at Theatre By The SeaBWW Review: BUDDY - THE BUDDY HOLLY STORY at Theatre By The Sea
by Larry O'Brien - Jun 6, 2016

Theatre By the Sea (TBTS) in Wakefield, RI (I would have thought Matunuck) opens its season with a rousing version of BUDDY-THE BUDDY HOLLY STORY, a jukebox musical in two acts with a book written by Alan Janes, and music and lyrics by a variety of songwriters, mostly of course, Buddy Holly. Based on the life and career of the early rock and roller, the musical hews more closely to Holly's actual life story than the 1978 film version, which starred Gary Busey, and follows Holly from his struggles to escape country music and establish himself as a rocker, to his untimely death in a plane crash in 1959.
