On Monday, July 28 at 8PM Musical Theatre Factory (MTF) will present an acoustic concert of songs from Peter Lerman's new musical play, THE SACRED HARP, about the nephew of a preacher who tries to break free from his Appalachian confines by building an enchanted guitar. The concert, directed by Austin Regan features Van Hughes (American Idiot, 9 to 5, Hairspray) and Christy Altomare (Mamma Mia!, Carrie: the Musical), as well as a full chorus performing traditional Sacred Harp hymns. The Yale Institute for Music Theatre announces the creative teams and casting for the two original book musicals, Afterland, music and lyrics by Benjamin Velez and book and lyrics by Kathryn Hathaway, and Clouds are Pillows for the Moon, music by Tidtaya Sinutoke and book and lyrics by Ty Defoe, which will be developed in an intensive lab setting in New Haven, June 3-15. The Institute culminates with open rehearsal readings of each project, presented as part of the International Festival of Arts & Ideas, on June 14 and 15. (more...)

MAMMA MIA!, the global smash hit musical based on the songs of ABBA, will transfer from the Winter Garden Theatre to the Broadhurst Theatre this fall. MCC Theater recently announced that Neil LaBute's new play, Reasons to be Happy, also directed by LaBute, will now extend through Saturday, June 29th. Reasons to Be Happy is a companion piece to LaBute's critically-acclaimed award-winning play,Reasons to Be Pretty, first produced at MCC Theater in 2008 before moving to Broadway where it was nominated for three 2009 Tony Awards, including Best Play. Ghostlight Records has just announced that Carrie: The Musical - Premiere Cast Recording has debuted atop the Billboard 'Top Broadway' Chart for the week ending September 30th. The official chart lists Carrie: The Musical as the #1 selling album of the week, followed by (in order of sales) Wicked, Bring It On, The Book of Mormon, Once, and Jersey Boys, all shows still running on Broadway, making Carrie's appearance atop the chart a rare feat. Released on Tuesday, September 25th, the immediate chart success of Carrie: The Musical signals the enduring qualities of its 2012 production at MCC Theater (which closed its celebrated run in April 2012) and the dynamic score with music by Academy AwardŽ-winner Michael Gore (Fame, Terms of Endearment), lyrics by Academy AwardŽ-winner Dean Pitchford (Fame, Footloose), and a book by Lawrence D.
