Brooklyn Center for the Performing Arts Receives NEA Challenge America Fast-Track Grant

National Endowment for the Arts (NEA) Senior Deputy Chairman Joan Shigekawa announced today that Brooklyn Center for the Performing Arts is one of 150 not-for-profit organizations nationwide to receive an NEA Challenge America Fast-Track grant. Brooklyn Center for the Performing Arts is recommended for a $10,000 grant to support their April 27, 2014 presentation of the Smithsonian Jazz Masterworks Orchestra's A Tribute to Ella Fitzgerald.

New York Live Arts to Present FRESH TRACKS, 12/19-21

New York City Opera's 2013-14 season and BAM's 2013 Next Wave Festival begin with the U.S. premiere of Anna Nicole, an opera by composer Mark-Anthony Turnage and librettist Richard Thomas based on the flamboyant life and tragic death of Anna Nicole Smith. This highly anticipated co-production includes seven performances at the BAM Howard Gilman Opera House, tonight, September 17 and September 19, 21, 24, 25, 27, and 28 at 7:30pm.

Brooklyn Center for the Performing Arts at Brooklyn College is pleased to announce its 2013-2014 world dance series. Since the inception of the dance series in 1966, more than 175 regional, national and international companies have premiered new works. This year's lineup includes Savion Glover's newest show STEPZ, the Nai-Ni Chin Dance Company performing a Lunar New Year Celebration, the Krasnoyarsk National Dance Company of Siberia, and the Russian National Ballet Theatre's production of THE SLEEPING BEAUTY. These companies reflect the artistic excellence and cultural diversity to which Brooklyn Center is dedicated. Tickets to Brooklyn Center's world dance series range from $30-$45 with a 50% discount for children ages 12 and under.

Approximately 100 New York City public school students will take the stage, alongside professional actors working as teaching artists in the ENACT Dropout Prevention Program, to present the SHOW UP! 2013, ENACT's 6th annual evening of original dramatic performances that depict the obstacles to staying in school. The performance will take place tonight, May 16, 2013 from 6:30-8:00 p.m. at the High School of Hospitality Management, located on West 50th St. between 10th and 11th Avenues in Manhattan. The event will be preceded by a reception at 5:15 PM. This year's program will address conflict and violence, hope and solutions.

THIRTEEN to Bring Broadway's ANNIE to NYC Classrooms as Part of Education Initiative

THIRTEEN, New York's flagship public media provider, and Arielle Tepper Madover Productions will bring hands-on theater education experiences to New York City students through the latest component of a three-part education initiative - Made up of audience development, an interactive website and a PBS documentary film airing this June - that strives to make the Broadway revival of ANNIE much more than an exciting new production of a classic musical. Through partnerships with the New York City's Department of Education's Office of the Arts and the Collaborative Arts Project 21 (CAP21), a Manhattan-based non-profit arts education organization, and with generous support from the New York City Council, a unique audience development program will immerse public school educators and underserved students from across the city in the art of musical theater.

Dirty Sock Funtime Band Performs Family Concert at The Jewish Museum, 2/24

The Dirty Sock Funtime Band performs a concert for families at The Jewish Museum on Sunday, February 24 at 2:00 pm. Nominated Best Kid's Band by Time Out New York Kids, this high energy group brings a carnival atmosphere to its performance, filled with call backs, sing-alongs, dance-alongs and jam-alongs. To celebrate the holiday of Purim, kids are invited to come in costume and dance to such klezmer rock songs as ClownaHagila. Members of the band include lead singer Michael Messer, Adam Jacobs aka Mr. Clown; guitarists Stephen Jacobs and Bill 'Billy Z.' Phillips; bass guitarist Jasper Leak; drummer Sean Dixon; clarinetist/saxophonist Ken Thomson; and dancer Annie Elmer. This concert is for children age 3 and up.

Movement Makers Dance Workshop and Gallery Tour for Children Set for the Jewish Museum, 2/17

The Jewish Museum is offering Movement Makers, a dance workshop and gallery tour on Sunday, February 17 at 10:30 am. Participants can explore creativity through movement with dancer Ashton McCullough, learning expressive techniques for putting the body in motion. This specially created program for children ages 8 to 12 is inspired by the Museum's current exhibition, Sharon Lockhart | Noa Eshkol.

David Weinstone and The Music for Aardvarks Band will perform two concerts for kids at The Jewish Museum on Sunday, February 10 at 11:30 am and 2:00 pm. Families will hear favorite songs that celebrate being a kid in New York City such asCity Kid, Taxi, Jack Hammer Joe and Modern Art. David Weinstone, founder of Music for Aardvarks, explains, 'our shows are rockin', and we try to have as much audience participation as possible. We've even had kids come up on stage with us to sing or dance.'

The Jewish Museum is presenting The Pop Ups - Radio Jungle, a concert for families on Sunday, February 3 at 2:00 pm. Concert attendees will enjoy a musical romp set in an imaginary world of mermaids, treasure maps, gigantic crayons and glowing constellations brought to life through cardboard props, hand-painted sets, and a colorful cast of original puppets. Featured songs are from The Pop Ups' new album, Radio Jungle, nominated for a 2013 GRAMMY Award for Best Children's Album. This program is recommended for children ages 2 to 7.

Music Classes for Toddlers Set for 1/29-3/19 at the Jewish Museum

Beginning January 29, The Jewish Museum will present Music Off the Wall, a new music and art series for toddlers on eight Tuesdays from 9:45 to 10:30 am. Led by musician and museum educator Mark Dzula, leader of the innovative and one-of-a-kind kid's band Jukebox Radio, this series offers a hip and playful blend of looking at art through a musical lens. Toddlers and their adult companions can discover fun ways to explore the Museum's galleries together through song, movement and hands-on activities. This series is designed for children ages 2 to 3.

The Macaroons will perform three concerts for families at The Jewish Museum on Tuesday, December 25 at 11:30 am, 1:15 pm and 3 pm. Families can enjoy a guitar-based sound that recalls everything from the Kinks to Queen to the Shins. The Macaroons will perform such songs as Hurry Up, Light The Candle, Mezuzah, Billy the Bagel and more.
